Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to develop and coordinate the public education and outreach initiatives of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: planning, scheduling, and conducting crime prevention programs; preparing, reviewing, and disseminating reports and correspondence on crime prevention and community outreach activities; communicating with citizen and business groups to provide public safety related and crime prevention resources and information; promoting crime prevention-related public events; and performing additional tasks as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday 8:00 - 5:00
May be required to work on religious holidays.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
Position Duties
High school diploma or equivalent with two years of experience in law enforcement, crime prevention, public relations, event planning, or a similar discipline required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
Must possess or have the ability to acquire Notary Public status within six months of hire.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field preferred.
Certifications in Security Assessment and/or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Develops, budgets, coordinates, and conducts public education, crime prevention, and public safety-related outreach events to the community on behalf of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department throughout the year; collaborates with sworn personnel and outside entities as needed to promote these events.
Performs crime prevention activities to include Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) audits and evaluations; participates in Neighborhood Watch and Neighborhood Association meetings; facilities public safety-related classes and educational outreach on various topics including but not limited to elder abuse, cybercrime and fraud prevention, and bullying and violence prevention.
Responds to routine requests for information received via telephone, email, and in person from officials, employees, and members of the staff, the public, or other individuals about crime prevention and public safety-related education and outreach activities.
Participates in the department's Citizen Policy Academy as a presenter for the Community Outreach Division.
Serves as a department liaison for civic groups for apartment complexes, Envision Athens, LEAD Athens, and other local civic associations and groups.
Connects with Athens-Clarke County citizens and visitors to promote community outreach events using social media platforms and in-person contacts.
Documents and reports all community outreach activities for inclusion in reports as requested or required by the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), police leadership, and various community partners.
Creates, designs, and updates educational and outreach materials used by and developed for the department.
Orders and maintains supplies and materials for community events, giveaways, etc. Solicits quotes, approves artwork, and makes recommendations about supply purchases.
Instructs, trains, assigns, reviews, and coordinates the work and activities of assigned volunteers as needed.
Assists in supervision of the Safety Patrol program.
Coordinates and leads tours of the Police Department for school groups and other community groups upon request.
Assists with fundraising, charitable donation, and grant applications and requests as needed.
Assists with the development of short- and long-term goals for the community outreach division, as needed.
Serves as a media relations liaison for crime prevention and community outreach activities; coordinates with the department's public information office for promoting these events on social media.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Police Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Neighborhood Service Officer.
Knowledge of the terminology used with the Police Department.
Knowledge of applicable federal/state statutes, unified government ordinances, departmental policies and procedures, and departmental methods as requred in the performance of duties.
Knowledge and ability to operate various office equipment including a computer, printer, typewriter, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, audio/visual equipment, and telephone.
Knowledge of software programs relevant to the position. Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques and digital communication as necessary in the completion of daily assignments.
Skill in oral/written communications, dealing wtih the public, planning and organizing work, maintaining records, managing files, and writing reports.
Skill to locate relevant web-based information and complile related reports for promulgation to others.
Ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff members. Ability to use independent judgment in route and non-routine situations.
Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.
Ability to plan, organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, printer, typewriter, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, audio/visual equipment, and telephone. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for light work.

Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative, technical or professional languages including legal and law enforcement terminology.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; interpret graphs.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, printer, typewriter, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, audio-visual equipment, and telephone.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands, fingers, and eyes accurately in using office equipment. Requires the ability to use the keyboard, lift, bend, push, and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as automated office equipment, secretarial supplies, and computer supplies. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.
