POSITION SUMMARY: 

The kitchen staff assists in the daily operations of the kitchen, supporting the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals and snacks for the YMCA's Education Departments. This role involves a variety of tasks related to food preparation, basic kitchen maintenance, cleaning, and ensuring a safe and sanitary environment. The ideal candidate is reliable, hardworking, and eager to learn about food service in a child-focused setting. 

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assist the Kitchen Manager and other kitchen staff in the preparation of meals and snacks, including washing, peeling, and chopping fruits and vegetables.
  • Help with the assembly of basic food items such as sandwiches, salads, and simple dishes.
  • Portion food items according to established guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including wiping down counters, tables, and equipment. Wash dishes, utensils, pots, and pans manually or using a dishwasher. Sweep and mop kitchen floors and clean up spills promptly. Empty trash and recycling receptacles.
  • Assist with the proper storage of food and supplies.
  • Assist with the transport of prepared meals and snacks to various program locations within the YMCA or designated sites.
  • Help with the setup of meal service areas, including arranging food and supplies.
  • Assist with the cleanup of meal service areas after meals.
  • Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines and procedures.
  • Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and as directed.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or potential hazards to the Kitchen Manager.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • No prior kitchen experience is required; willingness to learn is essential.
  • Basic understanding of food safety and hygiene is a plus.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
