The Position

Responsible for management of the arena operations in the absence of the Ice Arena Supervisor.   Trains and supervises part time staff in building and ice maintenance.

Shifts are scheduled for Sunday-Thursday and evenings.

Position Duties

  • Operates and performs general maintenance of ice resurfacing machine, ice edger and other ice related equipment. Operates light vehicles and equipment to include lifts, snow removal equipment, pressure washers and power tools. 
  • Monitors and performs general maintenance, trouble shooting and record keeping on all HVAC, refrigeration and other related mechanical equipment related to ice arena operations to ensure proper operation.
  • Performs general building maintenance and performs minor repairs as needed; performs general cleaning, room set-ups or arrangements and up-keep of the facility.
  • Work involves interaction with customer and public requests and complaints.
  • Problem-solve independently, process resolution using resources effectively and communicates necessary changes efficiently.     

  • Works cooperatively with other building staff to ensure maximum ice usage and avoid ice time loss.
  • Attends training and other staff meetings.  Participates in professional organizations supporting ice arena operations. 

  • Enforces safety rules and regulations to ensure the facility operates in a safe manner.  Operates in compliance with OSHA and other regulatory standards.

  • Responsible for security and emergency procedures, including opening/closing the facility.

  • Assists with recruiting, training, supervising and evaluation of part-time seasonal employees in operation of ice maintenance equipment and the general operation of the facility. 

  • Schedules part-time staff.   Assists with scheduling team rooms and ice time. 

  • Acts as the supervisor and first point of contact for events in the ice arena in the absence of the Ice Arena Supervisor. 

  • Performs and trains employees in established cash procedures for concessions, pro-shop and general revenues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Ice Arena Supervisor or the Community Center Operations Supervisor.
  • Assists in establishing rules and regulations to ensure the safe use of the facility.

Knowledge of:

  • Mechanical equipment and machinery necessary to operate an ice arena.

  • Building cleaning practices and supplies.

  • Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.

  • Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools.

Ability to:
  • Work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays and provide direct supervision to designated events or activities.  The position may require periodic changes to the schedule based on the demands of special events, facility schedules and staffing needs. 
  • Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Operate the energy management system and other related equipment. 
  • Operate any and all types of maintenance/ cleaning equipment.
  • Identify and respond to issues, concerns and needs in a professional and timely manner. 
  • Understand and utilize required software (i.e. Finnly scheduling software, building automation software, digital signage software, etc.). 

Minimum Qualifications

An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
Need to have: 

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Minnesota Drivers License
  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Two years' experience in ice arena or facility maintenance work.

Nice to have: 
  • Experience with the operation of ammonia-based refrigeration equipment
  • Experience with the use of computers

Environmental Conditions:

Indoor environment; exposure to noise from machinery; exposure to water, dust, dirt and cleaning chemicals; work with moving objects/vehicles.

Physical Conditions:

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; moderate to heavy continuous lifting and carrying; pulling, reaching, bending, climbing, and kneeling; general manual dexterity; adequate speech, hearing and vision required; must be able to operate assigned equipment.
