The Port of Stockton has an exciting opportunity for Chief of Police who will be instrumental in ensuring the preservation of order and protection of life and property. This position will oversee Port Police Department programs, services, and activities, while enforcing federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations within the Port’s authority.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in criminal and administrative investigations, field operations, background investigations, training, and budget management. The successful incumbent will be an influential leader, strategic thinker, and effective communicator possessing strong interpersonal skills. This is an at-will position subject to an employment agreement.

- Assumes full management responsibility for all Port Police Department programs, services, and activities; ensures the preservation of order, protects life and property, and oversees the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations within the Port’s authority.
- Develops, directs, and coordinates the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the Department; continuously monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; assesses and monitors the distribution of work, support systems and internal reporting relationships; identifies opportunities for improvement; directs the implementation of change.
- Selects, trains, motivates, and directs Department personnel; evaluates and reviews work for acceptability and conformance with department standards, including program and project priorities and performance evaluations; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline and termination procedures; responds to staff questions and concerns.
- Coordinates homeland security issues and policies with local, state, and federal agencies; participates in local, state, and federal homeland security committees including but not limited to the Area Maritime Security Committee, AAPA Security Committee, and the California Maritime Security Committee. Conducts inspections of Port facilities to determine the effectiveness of established security measures; serves as the designated Facility Security Officer for the Port.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education:- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in law, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field. Master’s degree in related field desired.
- Eight (8) years of increasingly responsible law enforcement work experience, including three (3) years of administrative and management experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
- Must possess and maintain First Aid, CPR, and blood borne pathogens certifications.
- Possession of, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card, to be maintained throughout employment.
- California POST Supervisor certification.
- California POST Management Certificate is preferred.
- Must possess ability to pass California POST background investigation.
