Job Summary: About the Position: This position is a Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Occupational Health in an Occupational Health (OH) Unit(s) in Military Treatment Facility (MTF) located at Naval Branch Health Clinic - Naval Station in Portsmouth, VA. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Major Duties:

  • Provides nursing assessment, diagnosis and treatment, nursing care and screening of occupational injuries, illnesses, pre-placement, periodic and termination exams along with fitness for duty exams.
  • Initiates lab, x-ray, or screening tests (spirometry, EKG, vision, audiogram) based on history, exposures, industrial hygiene/safety data, regulatory/legal requirements, and employee information on work practices of hazardous exposures.
  • Works collaboratively with the providers, Audiology, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health Technicians, etc., in the management of selected health problems.
  • Participates in the quality assurance program, including peer review and review of medical records for completeness of occupational health data, ensuring records are maintained according to standards.
  • Performs work site visits independently or with health professionals, physicians, industrial hygienists, and safety specialists to evaluate health hazards, work practices, and use of safety and protective equipment.
  • Tracks employees with occupational medical conditions, reviewing care and treatment related to their ability to return to duty, and those needing work accommodation, retraining, or disability retirement, referring cases to physicians for review.
  • Review alternative work assignments with the hiring activity based on the attending physician’s report of current and anticipated medical limitations when an employee is medically unable to continue routine job assignments.
  • Provides reproductive counseling, evaluations and referrals as it pertains to occupational reproductive exposures; recognizing the effects of hazards found at the work site under the direction of the provider.
  • Promotes health maintenance/wellness through coordination and participation in preventive health education programs and through counseling of individuals and groups with identified needs and interests.

Qualifications: In order to qualify, you must meet the Education and / or Experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement: Degree: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.). Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Foreign Nursing School that is accompanied by an official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts and/or Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools certification.) Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017, or before. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Education/Experience: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and possession of at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or above) which includes: providing nursing care to patients requiring occupational health services; collecting patient history; interpreting laboratory, x-ray, pulmonary function, audiograms and/or other tests; and performing work-site visit to evaluate health hazards, work practices, and utilization of proper safety/protective equipment. OR Education: A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field including but not limited to degrees: Microbiology, Nursing, Medical Science. Exemption: You are exempt from the qualification requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) from a professional nursing program OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education from a professional nursing program
