Job Summary: The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia and serves a veteran population of approximately 70,000 in north central West Virginia and adjacent counties in Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center provides primary care and basic mental health services at four CBOCs. The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center is located on a 16-acre site adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Park and the West Virginia State Nursing Home.

Major Duties:

  • This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until July 7, 2026. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be September 15, 2025, with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals until position is filled. Major Duties/Responsibilities: Emergency Medicine staff work directly with, including but not limited to, other physicians, nursing staff, administrative staff, and social workers. The Emergency Department (ED) operates 24/7 and the selectee will be involved in the evaluation, treatment, and management of patients requiring acute medical and specialty care. As an Emergency Physician you will be responsible for the following duties: Responsibilities include but are not limited to: emergent intake, patient assessment, patient history, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies, emergent resuscitation, and management of difficult airways. The Physician interprets ECGs and selected radiographic tests; performs invasive procedures for which incumbent is credentialed; initiates consults as well as referrals after discharge from the Emergency Department, and prescribes medications/supplies in accordance with VA policy and VA formulary and State regulations. Perform assessments/examinations on initial encounter with unscheduled, emergency and new patients. Coordinate patient treatment plans (involve Primary Care and specialists as appropriate). Order appropriate diagnostic tests as necessary to complete the evaluation. Admit patients to the hospital or discharge them from the ED with appropriate follow-up. Perform medication reconciliation with all ED discharged patients. Participate in Quality Assurance, chart reviews, and support applicable ED performance measures. Coordinate patient care with consultants as deemed appropriate. Provide physician oversight to nursing staff and other mid-level staff members. Participate in quality assurance programs and chart reviews. Attend physician staff meetings The selectee must demonstrate continuing effort to keep abreast of new medical developments and medical literature, and must meet facility and licensing requirements for continuing medical education (CME). Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: Lifting up to 35 pounds, intermittently; moderate carrying (15-35 pounds), intermittently; lifting over 35 pounds with assistive devices in accordance with the Safe Patient Handling Policy except in emergent situations requiring prompt patient care; pulling, intermittently; pushing, intermittently; reaching above the shoulders, intermittently, both hands required; walking, intermittently; standing, intermittently; kneeling, intermittently; and repeated bending.
