Boulder County Public Health Department is seeking to hire a Youth Opioid Overdose Prevention (YOOP) Youth AdvisorThe Youth Opioid Overdose Prevention (YOOP) Youth Advisor will work collaboratively on a team with other youth advisors and the Youth Naloxone Access Program Specialist. YOOP Youth Advisors deliver presentations on naloxone (Narcan) use to youth and community members, give feedback on current substance use issues and response to community needs, share overdose prevention information at community events, and create a youth friendly system for naloxone access in Boulder County.

Additionally, Youth Advisors will attend meetings of the Healthy Futures Youth Coalition (HFYC) and other youth focused programs and events. HFYC is a group of youth and adults who work together to identify and solve problems related to mental health and substance use in Boulder County.

Youth Advisors will regularly collaborate with Youth Advisors from other BCPH programs.

This is an hourly, non benefitted position with an anticipated end date of December 23rd, 2026 that will work 5-10 hours per week, Monday-Thursday including some required evenings and weekends. There is one Youth Advisor position open and it will start promptly. Availability this summer and during the 2025-2026 school year is required. This position will work primarily in-person, with some virtual work, depending on team needs. In-person meetings will take place at county offices in Boulder, Longmont, or Lafayette. The position requires availability over summer and after school and sometimes on weekends and evenings, including 4:30-6:00pm on Mondays and 4:00-8:00pm on Wednesdays (this is subject to change based on availability and need). Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $24.04 Hourly 

Tentative Hiring Timeline:

  • Phone Screening: July 21st
  • First Round Interviews: July 28th
  • Second Round Interviews: August 4th
  • Reference Check: August 5th

Position Duties

  1.  Facilitates Narcan (naloxone) and harm reduction trainings for youth and groups in the community
  2.  Collaborates to adapt and deliver trainings and curriculum related to harm reduction and naloxone use
  3.  Helps increase naloxone access for youth
  4.  Attends weekly meetings with the YOOP team
  5.  Actively participates in the Healthy Futures Youth Coalition meetings
  6.  Develops resources and participates in outreach and educational activities that support youth substance use prevention, harm reduction and mental health promotion
  7.  Coordinates and collaborates with other Boulder County Youth Advisors, youth-oriented leadership groups, and community members
  8.  Performs related work, as required
  9.  May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of current enrollment in high school or a GED program OR recent high school/GED graduation (must be between 16-20 years of age at the time of hire).

BACKGROUND CHECK & FINGERPRINTING:

  • For applicants over 18, a job offer is contingent on passing a criminal background investigation with fingerprinting. Having a criminal background does not necessarily disqualify applicants from being hired, unless the charge is related to child safety & welfare.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Youth Advisors are responsible for ensuring they can get to work, in-person meetings or events either via their own transportation or utilizing public transport - a bus pass is provided to Youth Advisors
  • Must be able to work remotely and be willing to come into the office and attend in-person meetings and community events
  • Bilingual language skills (i.e. English/Spanish) are preferred but not required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with youth and adults
  • Some public speaking and presentation experience or a willingness to learn
  • Motivation to engage and grow in facilitation, public speaking, communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Enthusiasm for building community relationships
  • While not required, we welcome your personal experience with substance use issues as it helps improve our education and programming
  • Commitment to health equity - ensuring that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible
  • Must practice cultural responsiveness - be able to work with and connect diverse identities/abilities, cultures, and backgrounds and work in an inclusive and nonjudgmental fashion
