Job Description:

Position Summary

The gastroenterology registered nurse provides professional nursing care in an outpatient office setting. This role supports physicians and advanced practice providers by assisting with in-office procedures, administering medications, coordinating patient care across multiple departments, and ensuring timely and effective communication. The GI Nurse is expected to function independently, demonstrate strong critical thinking skills, and prioritize patient care per acuity level.

Key responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Duties:

  • Provide direct patient care, including assessments, rooming, education, and follow-up.
  • Perform in-office procedures within nursing scope, under direct physician supervision.
  • Administer GI medications per physician orders, with appropriate monitoring, education, and documentation.
  • Prepare patient charts for physicians prior to visits, ensuring completeness of medical records, test results, and documentation.
  • Place physician orders accurately and promptly.
  • Schedule office visits, labs, imaging, and procedures as directed by providers or management.
  • Manage assigned inboxes, including patient recalls, reviewing and addressing messages, and ensuring timely follow up.
  • Draft pathology letters, letters of medical necessity, and other communications as directed by physicians.
  • Triage, answer, and return patient phone calls. Respond to all voicemails and tasks in a timely manner.
  • Call patients with test results as directed by the physician, ensuring clear documentation of communication.
  • Prioritize patient care according to acuity level and office policy.
  • Function independently with treatments, procedures, and equipment appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Assist with patient education related to GI conditions, medications, and follow up care.

Coordination & Communication:

  • Collaborate with all departments involved in patient care including but not limited to, all UCBC/UHA care teams, pharmacy, referral coordinators, new patient coordinators, pre-certification staff, and internal/external procedure facilities.
  • Work closely with medical assistants to provide additional support for higher acuity patients, insuring safe, efficient, and coordinated care.
  • Collaborate with GI procedure schedulers to ensure appropriate scheduling, pre-procedure requirements-including education and assessment, and patient care coordination.
  • Provide cross-coverage and support for all providers as needed or as directed by management, not limited to assigned physicianprovider.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with physicians, management, staff, patients, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Assist coworkers when needed to promote teamwork and efficient clinic operations.

Training & Support:

  • Assist with the orientation and training of new employees, ensuring consistency with office policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Serve as a clinical resource to colleagues by sharing knowledge and supporting professional growth.

Professional Standards & Conduct:

  • Take responsibility for meeting general job requirements, code of conduct, and policies as outlined in the employee handbook. This includes:
    • Maintaining attendance and punctuality in accordance with policy.
    • Adhering to the dress code and presenting a neat, professional appearance.
    • Maintaining an organized and clean work area.
    • Limiting use of office equipment and computers to work related functions.
    • Completing tasks within designated timelines as directed by management or physician.
    • Demonstrating excellent customer service standards and all patient and staff interactions.
    • Addressing coworkers courteously and professionally at all times.
    • Taking responsibility for personal and professional growth, including expansion of knowledge and participation in ongoing education specific to the GI specialty.
    • Willingly perform all other duties as assigned by manager or supervising physician.

Qualifications:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Georgia.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience in GI, internal medicine, or ambulatory office-based experience preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in verbal and written English.
  • Strong computer skills required and proficiency with electronic medical records preferred.
  • Excellent critical thinking, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  • Requires sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Long periods of standing.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Extensive computer work including prolonged screen time.
  • Potential exposure to communicable illnesses and chemicals; adherence to infection control and safety protocols required.
  • Standard office based schedule with flexibility as patient care needs dictate.
