Grant Funded Position 

 

POSITION: Support and Improvement Specialist

 

LOCATION: Department of Instruction

 

POSITION SUMMARY: The Support and Improvement Specialist is a grant funded position. The Support and Improvement Specialist works with schools identified by the state as Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) to guide school teams in developing and monitoring the TSI plans, to work with the school principal to run team meetings, and to complete walk-throughs and provides feedback based on the school plan. The specialist will work with the school-based staff member who is supporting the TSI process and identifying and tracking intervention data. This specialist is responsible for supporting the schools in making data-driven informed instructional decisions by the schools in the analysis of data, identification of root causes, planning of specific actions and interventions, and the evaluation of the progress of those actions and interventions. The specialist serves as one of the points of contact with the state and will develop a system support process for schools identified for TSI.

 

REPORTS TO: Director of System and Instructional Performance

 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE: At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

  1. A Master's degree or equivalent
  2. At least five years of successful teaching experience

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions. At the time of employment, the candidate must have:

  1. Knowledge of instructional best practices, delivery of specially designed instruction, collaboration and co- teaching models, social-emotional learning and effective behavior strategies.
  2. Demonstrated skill in differentiating program and instruction to meet the varied needs of learners
  3. Demonstrated ability to utilize and promote equitable practices in all facets of education.
  4. Understanding and ability to maintain rapport with people from all identities, cultures, and
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of equity including the ability to advocate for marginalized students.
  6. Evidence of broad reading and knowledge in professional literature and research related to the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards, differentiation, and equity.
  7. Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze student achievement data for instructional decision-making.
  8. Demonstrated exceptional skills in written and oral communication.
  9. Demonstrated interpersonal skills when working with diverse groups (parents, other professionals, students, teachers, administrators, community agency representatives.)
  10. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and coach adult learners.
  11. A valid driver's license and motor vehicle insurance.
  12. Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks similar to the responsibilities listed below.
  13. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:

  1. Develops a written system of support for schools that are identified as TSI.
  2. Attends data training as part of a school team.
  3. Discusses school progress with the school principal during monthly meetings.
  4. Attends each school's School Improvement or TSI meetings. 
  5. Facilitates quarterly meetings with the TSI schools to provide a process of sharing and support. 
  6. Models the use of protocols for school improvement planning and discussions.
  7. Analyzes data from each school and determine greatest areas of needs and meets with the school principal to discuss next steps for planning.
  8. Collaborates with supervisors/specialists from the Departments of Instruction and Special Education to improve instructional programs for all students.
  9. Collaborates with building administrators, teachers and central office supervisors and teacher specialists on school improvement/TSI implementation.
  10. Assists school-based staff in analyzing, displaying, and using data to inform and improve instruction and learning practices related to literacy.
  11. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence by attending, implementing, and sharing professional learning opportunities.
  12. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
  13. Maintains regular, on-time attendance.
  14. Thinks, concentrates, and interacts with others.
  15. Works flexible hours as necessary.
  16. Travels from school to school as necessary.

OTHER JOB DUTIES: Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor limit duties that might reasonably be assigned. Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director of System and Instructional Performance or designee.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: None

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: None

 

UNUSUAL DEMANDS: Will be subject to a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends and working across the system at multiple schools.

 

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Ten (10) month position (November 2025– August 2026) $50.24 per hour; 20 hours per week/ 4 hours per day. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.

 

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.

 

EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION:  Immediate Vacancy.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.

Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
