Sports Editor, The California Post
New York Post · Los Angeles, United States Of America · Onsite
- Senior
- Office in Los Angeles
Job Description :
The New York Post is heading West – and this is your chance to be a part of history as we open a brand-new newsroom and make a significant investment in Los Angeles. The California Post will be a game changer, putting the people of the Golden State first and holding the powerful to account across digital platforms and print.
This is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: The California Post will bring The New York Post’s DNA of powerful, agenda-setting journalism to the West Coast and be a fresh and fearless voice for common sense.
Our focus will also go well beyond hard-hitting news and iconoclastic opinion. The nationally recognized Page Six will bring its sassy and brassy attitude directly to the entertainment capital of the world. The California Post Sports department will deliver muscular coverage of the biggest teams in town, from the locker room to the front office. Our Tech team will reveal the latest innovators and innovations that will shape the nation’s future.
Los Angeles is one of the great cities of the world, and it’s time L.A. – and California at large – had a bold, new voice. The California Post will be that voice. California, here we come!
As part of our bold expansion into Los Angeles, we are seeking a Sports Editor to oversee and direct all sports coverage for the California Post. Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Sports Editor will lead the sports desk in one of the greatest sporting cities in the world, home to global sporting franchises that have a storied history in winning. From the Lakers to the Dodgers and the Rams, this is the job for the leader that wants to work in at the centre of it all, the guiding a team of reporters and editors, setting coverage priorities, and delivering agenda-setting journalism that resonates in Los Angeles and beyond. This is a hands-on role for an editor who lives and breathes sports, has a sharp eye for what’s trending, and knows how to turn stories into must-read coverage across platforms.
Responsibilities:
Oversee all sports coverage for the California Post, from Los Angeles’ major teams to the must read, must see college stories.
Lead and mentor a team of reporters, columnists, and editors, providing day-to-day guidance, feedback, and editorial direction.
Be on the ground when needed, identifying stories, trends, and moments that matter most to LA sports fans.
Shape coverage strategies to ensure we set the agenda on the stories that matter, from the playmakers to the board room.
Edit, polish, and elevate copy, ensuring every story meets the Post’s standards of impact, clarity, and voice.
Develop and execute a social media strategy for sports coverage in collaboration with the audience team, ensuring stories gain maximum reach across platforms.
Collaborate cross-functionally with photo, design, video, and digital teams to package content in creative and compelling ways.
Manage the sports desk’s daily workflow, setting clear priorities, assigning stories, and ensuring deadlines are met.
Leverage analytics and audience insights to refine coverage strategies and grow readership.
Represent the California Post in the sports community, cultivating relationships with key sources, teams, and organizations.
Requirements:
At least 7–10 years of professional sports journalism experience, with proven success in editorial leadership roles.
Deep knowledge of the Los Angeles and national sports landscapes, with strong instincts for what stories will resonate.
Demonstrated experience leading teams of reporters and editors, providing coaching, guidance, and mentorship.
Strong news judgment with experience making the right decisions on the stories and opinion that matter, of setting the pace, rather than following the pack.
Excellent writing, editing, and headline skills; ability to sharpen copy for accuracy, clarity, and impact.
Proficiency with WordPress or similar CMS platforms; experience managing digital workflows.
Strong understanding of social media platforms and audience engagement strategies.
Proven ability to work cross-functionally across newsroom departments, including video, design, and audience development.
Exceptional organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
A collaborative leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to newsroom excellence.
Note: This role is based in our Los Angeles office and requires regular onsite presence.
At The New York Post we recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, our ranges reflect our good faith estimate to pay fairly as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
In addition to compensation, the company provides eligible employees a comprehensive and highly competitive benefits package, with a variety of physical health, retirement and savings, caregiving, emotional wellbeing, transportation, and other benefits, including “elective” benefits employees may select to best fit the needs and personal situations of our diverse workforce.
As an equal opportunity employer, the New York Post does not discriminate in hiring or the terms and conditions of employment because of an individual’s race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law. The New York Post will consider the provision of reasonable accommodations to known physical or mental disabilities of otherwise qualified applicants to enable them to participate in our application process and to effectively perform the essential functions of the job, unless doing so would impose an undue financial or operational hardship.
Pay Range: $150,000 - $175,000
