Job Title: Self-Contained Instructional Aide
Location: Bedford North Lawrence High School
Reports To: Principal
Position Summary:
The Self-Contained Instructional Aide supports special education students—either individually or in small groups—by assisting with academic tasks, daily routines, and other responsibilities assigned by the classroom teacher. This role is essential in creating a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist teachers with daily classroom activities and student support
Work with students individually or in small groups on learning tasks
Supervise the classroom when the teacher is temporarily unavailable
Prepare, organize, and clean up classroom materials and supplies
Monitor students during non-instructional times such as lunch, recess, transitions, and assemblies
Maintain records including attendance, student files, field trip forms, and assignments
Support students in completing make-up work
Provide assistance to substitute teachers to ensure classroom continuity
Administer basic first aid when necessary until a school nurse is available
Provide restroom and mobility support for students with physical disabilities
Assist students with boarding and exiting school transportation
Collaborate with therapists and specialists to support individual student needs
Document behavioral incidents and assist with behavior management strategies
Distribute instructional materials and prepare worksheets, letters, and classroom communication
Perform other related duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required
One to two years of related experience preferred
Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered
No special licensure or certification required
Physical Requirements:
Operate common office and classroom equipment such as computers, copiers, and audiovisual tools
Occasionally lift or carry up to 20 pounds
Frequently walk or stand; may sit for short periods
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Provide guidance and instruction to students
Assist in classroom supervision and behavior management
Mathematical Skills:
Basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages
Language and Communication Skills:
Read and interpret various instructional documents such as lesson plans, test materials, and student records
Prepare accurate written reports, correspondence, and classroom materials
Follow verbal and written directions accurately
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and the public
Interpersonal Skills:
Show patience, adaptability, and professionalism
Build supportive relationships with students and staff
