About the job
The Developer Experience group at Docker is looking for a Technical Writer to help developers and development teams build, share, and run applications in a fast-moving landscape. In this role, you’ll be responsible for writing and refining product documentation that’s accurate and effective. As a Technical Writer, you’ll have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, creative environment to produce world-class product documentation.
Responsibilities
- Write accurate, well-organized, consistent, and highly effective content for new and updated features.
- Collaborate with engineers, UX, product managers, and other technical writers to continuously improve Docker documentation.
- Independently research, plan, lead, and deliver content initiatives.
- Work with the UX team to create and review in-product UI text and error messages.
- Use the product, test each procedure and workflow, become an expert user, and provide feedback to the product development teams.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to align product documentation with other forms of customer-enablement content.
- Help lead documentation process improvements.
- Monitor and address feedback received from the community through various channels such as Slack, Docs GitHub repository, etc
- Actively participate in agile development team meetings and represent the interests of the product documentation team and Docker customers through user feedback and analytics.
- 5+ years of experience in researching, planning, writing, and editing documentation for software products.
- Experience working with a "Docs as Code" workflow.
- Experience leading content initiatives and working with cross-functional teams.
- Previous technical writing experience for developers, IT operations, and DevOps audiences.
- A team-player with experience working well remotely within geographically distributed teams.
- Excellent content planning and organization skills.
- Excellent written and verbal English language skills.
- Ability to quickly learn complex concepts and technologies and clearly explain them to others within the target audience’s context.
- Experience with writing SaaS Documentations
- Experience with creating documentation in an Agile development environment.
- Experience with a version control system such as Git, SVN, CVS.
- Experience with authoring and publishing tools like Markdown, HTML, CSS.
- Experience working on open source-based software products and/or participation in an open-source project.
- Proficiency on Linux operating systems using the command-line Git.
- Familiarity with one or more coding languages.
- Experience working with developer-focused platforms, tools and services such as Terraform, AWS, Jenkins, Netlify, GitHub, MongoDB, Twilio, Docker, etc.
- Experience working in a start-up environment.
- Being a fully remote workplace, Docker has a focus on keeping teams connected. Your first two weeks will include 1:1 sessions intended to introduce you to your team and others with whom you will interact frequently.
- Expect to spend time on other onboarding activities like IT setup, navigating productivity tools, and getting familiar with your regular calendar cadence.
- Become familiar with Docker’s values and goals, our leadership, your team, your tools, and where to go for information - everything you need to be effective in your role.
- Build an understanding of the “Docs-as-Code” workflow at Docker.
- By the end of your first month, you are comfortable opening pull requests in the Docker Docs GitHub repository.
- In your first three months, you’ll have developed a good relationship with your team, and an understanding of the Docker ecosystem
- Actively engage with stakeholders in Engineering, PM, UX, Marketing, and Support, and work collaboratively on strategic initiatives.
- Gain a deep understanding of the product you are working on, delivering content which meets the quality standards.
- Comfortable handling ad-hoc requests and are able to prioritize the tasks and ensure content is delivered on time.
- Within your first year, you’ll have made significant contributions to the product you are working on.
- Establish strong relationships with the Docs team and stakeholders in Engineering, PM, UX, Marketing, and Support
- Work with your manager to create a Career Development Plan that will outline your trajectory beyond your first year.
- Demonstrate the use of analytics to make data-driven decisions.
- Gain a deep understanding of our customers goals, their workloads, and their use cases.
