The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Chemical Hygiene and Biological Safety Officer [R0146577]
ROLE of the POSITION
This position reports to the Environmental Management and Laboratory Safety (EMLS) Manager and is responsible for overseeing the Chemical Hygiene and Biological Safety Programs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This position ensures compliance with applicable safety regulations across the UNLV main campus, remote campuses, and research parks.
Key Responsibilities:
Support campus laboratory operations by conducting inspections, preparing detailed reports, identifying safety concerns, and implementing corrective actions to maintain compliance and promote a safe research environment.
Provide other support, including emergency response, hazardous material shipping, biological safety, safety committee attendance, and the resolution of other hazardous material, chemical, and waste issues on campus.
Train faculty, staff, and students in hazardous chemical and biological material handling, safe laboratory practices, proper waste segregation and disposal, emergency response procedures, regulatory compliance requirements, and the use of personal protective equipment to minimize risks and maintain safe working environments.
Manage all aspects of the Asbestos Management Program, including hazardous material inspections and ensuring compliance with NAC, NRS, OSHA, and EPA regulations.
Perform industrial hygiene-related activities, such as monitoring for airborne contaminants, ensuring proper calibration and use of monitoring equipment, conducting exposure assessments, interpreting sampling results, and implementing appropriate control measures to mitigate workplace hazards.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Assistant Director or EMLS Manager.
The person in this position shall:
Be assigned "on-call" duty to be able to respond to campus incidents after work hours.
Obtain RCRA and Hazardous Material/DOT/IATA Shipping Certifications.
Acquire and maintain AHERA Asbestos Building Inspector, Contractor/Supervisor, and Management Planner Certifications.
This position is also a main contact for various activities that arise, not described above, which fall generally in the category of laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, or waste management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and three to five years of experience working in the scientific community, with an emphasis on the chemical and biological sciences. Familiarity with the regulatory requirements for management and disposal of asbestos and waste chemicals is also required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
One or more recognized and applicable professional certifications are desired, such as the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO). Management or supervisory responsibilities in laboratories or an environmental field are preferred.

SALARY
Salary range is $80,000 to $90,000, or commensurate with the labor market.
