GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Requires the fundamental understanding of the principles, concepts, and methods of environmental health  program work, consumer health programs, or other environmental health concerns.  Must demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge while performing a variety of duties involving the assistance with coordination and/or monitoring, of projects, or activities. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Investigates and addresses health and concerns related to environmental health in various settings including homes, workplaces, and public places.
• Inspects restaurant, food services providers, and other establishments for compliance with health and safety standards.
• Collects and analyze samples of air, soil and water and other substances to identify potential environmental health risks.
• Prepares reports detailing inspection findings and recommend actions for remediation of violations.
• Participates in educational outreach activities on environmental issues that pertain to the Cherokee Nation and to local communities, schools, and colleges.
• Organizes and uploads information into various databases.
• Attends trainings and conferences related to the program as needed.
• Ability to use various technical tools and software for environmental sampling, data analysis, and report preparation.
• Represents the department effectively when in contact and with other relationships with the public and other government agencies.
• Performs various duties associated with the following programs elements: Soil Profile Tests and Percolation Tests for On-Site Sewage Treatment Systems, Mold Assessments, Food Handler Trainings, Bacteriological and Chemical Water Analysis, Mosquito Surveillance, Rabies Clinics.
• May be required to travel to training events, conferences, and temporary work locations.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

• Performs work under direct supervision.
• Handles basic issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.
• Possesses beginning to working knowledge of subject matter.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree with a major in public health, environmental health, environmental science, physical science, natural science, biological science, agricultural science, or an equivalent major.
• A minimum of 30 semester hours in physical, natural, and biological sciences, public health and/or environmental health or environmental protection or both.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

• Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
• Must be a professional Register Environmental Specialist or Sanitarian in the State of Oklahoma or be able to obtain certification within 1 year.

The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
