JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Staff Nurse

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Student Support Services

Building Principal

Certified School Nurses

JOB GOALS: To assist the school nurse in maintaining and/or improving the health status of students, thus enabling them to profit fully from their educational experiences.

To assist the school nurse in promoting optimum health status and lifestyles for all students through the joint efforts of the home, school and community.  Serving multiple buildings on the same campus.

QUALIFICATIONS: RN License Required

Current certification in CPR, First Aid & Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Pediatric/Adolescent/Ambulatory Care nursing experience (preferred, but not required)

Bachelor’s degree (BSN preferred, but not required)

Certification as a School Nurse by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (preferred, but not required)

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The function of the registered nurse will have been satisfactorily performed when he/she: 

1. Applies appropriate nursing theory as basis for decision making in the school setting:

• Examines basic assumptions of the nursing theories related to school practice
• Refines content of the belief system and integrates new theories.
• Applies relevant theories as the basis for measurable objectives and relevant interventions for the student, family and school personnel.
• Shares theoretical information with peers, students, family, other professionals and the community to assist change.

2.     Assists the school nurse in establishing and maintaining a comprehensive school health program following the guidelines of the Pennsylvania School Code, the Division of School Health Regulations and the school district policy.

• Works with the school nurse to establish, review, and revise policy and procedures for a comprehensive school health program.
• Helps the school nurse arrange staff development programs for school personnel for first aid, emergency care procedures and current health issues.
• Promotes good safety practices, both within and outside of the school buildings.
• Identifies students at-risk for physical and psychosocial problems and communicates health needs to the school nurse and other school personnel.
• Serves as a member of the student assistance team and /or instructional support team as requested by the administration. Reports significant cases to the school nurse.  
• Maintains comprehensive school health records for each student.
• Assists school nurses in preparation of reports as required by the district and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of School Health.
• Uses data collected to plan and evaluate the school health program, and reports findings to the school nurse.
• Collaborates with the school nurses, administrators and personnel in assessing and improving the social and emotional climate of school classrooms.
• Involves students in maintaining a healthful school environment.

   3. Develops individualized health plans for students using nursing process:

• Collects information about the health and developmental status of the student in a systematic and continuous manner including health and social histories, screening results, physical assessment, emotional status, and performance level and health goals.
• Collects data from students, family, significant others, school personnel and health care professionals as needed.
• Uses data collected about the health and educational status of the student to determine a nursing diagnosis.
• Coordinates efforts with those of other providers and school personnel to decrease duplication of care.
• Identifies the relationship between health status and the students’ ability to learn.
• Develops a nursing care plan with specific goals and interventions, delineating school-nursing actions unique to student needs.
• Intervenes as guided by the nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore health, prevent illness and affect rehabilitation.
• Assesses student response to nursing actions in order to revise the database, nursing diagnosis, and nursing care plan and to determine progress made toward goal achievement.
• Documents diagnoses, plans, interventions, and results on the student health records.
• Enforces immunization regulations as they pertain to each student.
• Administers emergency first aid treatment in accordance with the American Red Cross guidelines.
• Participates in health counseling and education.
• Assists in community agency referrals.

      4.  Collaborates with other professionals in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation programs and other school              health activities.

• Acts as an advocate for the student and family when appropriate.
• Includes the student in the team conference whenever possible and appropriate.
• Identifies health related needs and objectives for inclusion in the individual education plan and assumes responsibility for provision of health related procedures and treatment.
• Cooperates with other team members and community sources of care to prevent duplication of services.

     5.  Assists students, families and groups to achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education.

• Identifies needs for health education.
• Serves as a resource person for health education classes and as a member of the curriculum committee for health education.
• Counsels’ students and families in health related matters.
• Promotes preventive self-care strategies with school personnel. 

     6. Assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development. 

     7.  Participates with other members of the community to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate school health services and            community services that include the broad continuum of promotion of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.

• Participates in planning for school health services within the community.
• Provides coordination with existing systems and services.
• Facilitates the development and implementation of school health services.
• Interprets school health services, needs, and the role of the nurse to the school and community.
• Uses community resources for referral of students with unmet health needs in the school.
• Collaborates with agencies within and outside the community to ensure continuity of service and care.

• Contributes to nursing and school health through innovations in theory and practice and participation in research.  

     8. Assists school nurse to coordinate and/or carry out the following services:

• Medical examinations annually

1. Kindergarten or first grade
2. Sixth grade
3. Eleventh grade
4. Bus drivers
5. Student athletes
6. New students from out-of-state without a recent physical exam

• Vision screening annually for all students.
• Hearing screenings annually:

1. Kindergarten
2. First grade
3. Second grade
4. Third grade
5. Seventh grade
6. Eleventh grade
7. All students who have a history of hearing loss will be screened annually.
8. All students from out-of-state without a recent hearing exam

• Height and weight annually for all students.
• Dental examinations annually:

1. Kindergarten
2. Third grade
3. Seventh grade
4. All students from out-of-state without a recent dental exam

• Scoliosis screening annually

1. Sixth grade
2. Seventh grade

•   Special examinations – students examined outside of mandated grades
