Ledyard Middle School is seeking a Long Term Substitute Physical Education and Health Teacher beginning Mid-October, 2025 through March 13, 2026 based on the needs of the district. Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the successful candidate will create a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise.

Responsibilities:

Motivate each student to cultivate physical fitness, and appropriate social and emotional adjustment
Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, and individual, dual or team sports, utilizing curriculum designated by Ledyard Public Schools and other appropriate learning activities
Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers and health teachers in planning and implementing a balanced physical education and health program
Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement
Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas
Provide appropriate safety instruction and conduct safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students
Manage inventory and storage space
Evaluate each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge and contribution in team sports
Manage health education programs that help students maximize and maintain healthy lifestyles
Prepare and distribute health education materials
Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress
Supervise students in and out of classroom activities during the assigned working day
Model non discriminatory practices in all activities.

Qualifications:

CT 043 Health and 044 Physical Education certifications
Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment
Master’s Degree in related area preferred
Successful prior physical education and health teaching experience is a plus

Additional Duties:

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Pay:

The daily rate for substitute teachers is $130. Please note for long term substitute positions (40+ days): The daily rate for long term substitute teachers with certification is $278.61 beyond the 40th consecutive day worked in the same assignment.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds overhead at times
Must be able to traverse the classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child
