Your role and responsibilities

This position is for a Senior Systems Administrator supporting the ALTESS Windows team. ALTESS serves as a managed service provider for U.S. Army and DoD IT systems, operating an on-premises private cloud with planned expansion into managed cloud services, beginning with Microsoft Azure and followed by Amazon Web Services.

The environment is a mixed and growing Windows application landscape. The Senior Systems Administrator will work collaboratively with the existing Windows team to manage, maintain, deploy, troubleshoot, and support server infrastructure across a diverse customer base.

Responsibilities include planning, executing, and implementing new system hardware and software, as well as developing and maintaining technical instructions, standard operating procedures, and policies. The role also requires monitoring server operations, producing utilization and performance reports, and identifying issues and corrective actions as needed. Additionally, the position supports the full lifecycle management of vendor equipment within the data center, including firmware version control and scheduled preventive maintenance.

Required technical and professional expertise

  • 7-10 years of senior-level Windows Systems Administration experience, with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

  • Proven ability to manage multiple large-scale projects in complex enterprise environments

  • Strong knowledge of automation concepts, tools, and scripting (PowerShell, SCCM, etc.), including automating routine administrative tasks

  • Solid understanding of network, storage, server, and application technologies, with working knowledge of DoD STIGs and IAVM security practices

  • Excellent documentation, communication, and collaboration skills, including developing and maintaining technical documentation and instructions

Must live within 50 miles of Radford, VA as this job requires in person work at least 3 days per week

Must hold and maintain an Active DoD Secret clearance

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • Experience supporting medium-to-large data center environments, including maintaining data center technologies and developing firmware/driver best practices to ensure high system availability

  • Strong PowerShell scripting skills, with the ability to design, document, and deliver enterprise-level implementations using tools such as MS Project and Visio

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain technical documentation and instructions, and to train and mentor junior team members
