About the Department

Provide basic administrative support services to assist in the effective functioning of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Positions allocated to this class are distinguished from the Legal Assistant 1 position in that incumbents in the Legal Assistant 2 position will perform legal office administrative support work involving a broad range of complex functions involving the more serious and complex cases which support the work of Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys. Incumbents in this position must be dependable, have excellent oral and written communication skills, be able to work independently as well as demonstrate the ability to interact with others in a cooperative and effective manner, and be able to multitask and prioritize, meet schedules and deadlines, and ability to work with constant interruptions. Advancement to Legal Assistant 3 is not automatic and is based on need and demonstrated legal assistant competence. 

Position Duties

The following examples of duties and accountabilities illustrates the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position. Employee must comply with all County and department policies, procedures, WAC’s and RCW’s, or other regulatory bodies. 

  • Preparation of Legal Documents and Court Proceedings: This function involves the use of personal computer and standard word processing, case management system, and legal document software programs to produce a variety of complex documents, contracts, and pleadings for Felony, District, Juvenile and/or Civil proceedings. These include, but are not limited to, charging information, summons, complaints, interrogatories, discovery, subpoenas, jury instructions, warrants, and other documents used in trial preparation and case dispositions. These documents are prepared with a substantial degree of independence. Incumbents for this position work primarily in felony and/or complex civil case support.
  • General Duties and Support for Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys: In addition to tasks which the Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys assigns, the incumbent will also be responsible for creating and maintaining criminal and/or civil cases from filing through final disposition. This will include, but not be limited to, independently collecting, reviewing and preparing discovery for the attorney and defense counsel; take phone calls and messages, review and reply to correspondence; prepare for court dockets, hearings and trials; provide information on cases according to strict protocols of protection of confidential information; maintain professional decorum with attorneys, law enforcement and other parties to legal proceedings. The incumbent will also provide telephone and other assistance to the front reception desk as deemed necessary. 

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  3. Computer literacy and use of standard software programs/case management systems.
  4. General office procedures.
  5. Prior secretarial experience involving production of complex documents.
  6. Valid Driver’s License: With proof of automobile insurance.
  7. Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record.
  8. Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred:
  • Prior office support experience in legal, criminal justice or courtroom setting. Legal terminology & record keeping. 
  • Familiarity with JIS, ODESSEY and Karpel systems.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.

Other Qualifications

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office environment involving both sitting at a desk or workstation and standing for relatively brief periods at a public reception counter or copier, in addition to delivering documents to the courts and other departments. The nature of contact with the public normally does not involve risk of harm.

Physical Requirements:
The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, write, hear, speak and lift up to 50 lbs. of unequal weight.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral, and depth perception.  This job requires employees to stand and/or sit for 8+ hours per day, 5 days per week.
