Chalk Point Generating Station, situated in Aquasco, Maryland, is a key power generation facility with a total capacity of approximately 1,618 MW. The station features a diverse lineup of nine generating units, including seven gas turbines and two steam turbines. This strategic configuration enhances efficiency and reliability, ensuring the station effectively meets regional energy demands.

Opportunity Summary

The Combustion Turbine (CT) Technician is responsible for assisting in the operation of power plant systems. This position entails active participation in start-up, shutdown, and routine operations of various plant systems, including critical auxiliary apparatus such as air compressors, circulating water systems, and generator cooling systems. Performing tests, inspections, and minor equipment repairs to maintain optimal operating conditions is a fundamental aspect of this role. The CT Technician collaborates closely with the Control Room Operator, other operations and maintenance personnel, and management to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the power plant.

Your scope of responsibility as Combustion Turbine (CT) Technician will include the following primary functions: 

• Start, stop, and operate combustion turbine-generators and auxiliaries as required while monitoring and recording readings from indicators and instruments to ensure safe operations within prescribed limits. Ensure alarms and upset conditions are properly cleared by taking appropriate corrective actions.
• Execute plant shutdown and start-up procedures as necessary to meet generating requirements, maintaining safe and efficient operation in compliance with environmental regulations (federal, state, and local).
• Read meters, gauges, or monitor automatic devices to record data such as equipment operating temperatures, vibrations, operating hours, pressure, and fluid levels to verify operating conditions.
• Observe, record, and evaluate system conditions, as well as maintain and review operational and maintenance reporting logs to keep management informed of unusual conditions.
• During maintenance and overhaul periods, report progress of work as needed, even when not on an assigned shift, may be required.
• Read P&ID diagrams and utilize facility operating procedures and equipment technical manuals to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair facility equipment to ensure equipment operates within the specified operating range.
• Overhaul and repair plant equipment such as combustion turbines, generators, pumps, fans, motors, gas compressors, and water treatment systems as required, with maintenance actions recorded on Work Order forms.
• Display full support of the Maximo Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and dedication to the facility maintenance philosophy.
• Understand, comply with, and take on specific tasks/responsibilities assigned in all regulatory procedures and facility safety standards.
• Keep all training requirements current, including First Aid, CPR, OSHA, using Web-Based GPi Learn, and other available training modules, seminars, and courses offered by NAES Corporation.
• When assigned to the control room, monitor the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis.
• Operate from established procedures under general directions and minimum supervision, with the authority to control plant operations safely, aiming for no recordable accidents in compliance with all environmental permits. Make decisions within prescribed operating guidelines.
• Conduct periodic log and record reviews to ensure that lockout/tagout procedures, equipment status, and designated administrative systems function effectively.
• Participate actively in the administrative maintenance of plant operating manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
• Assist in executing maintenance plans by offering assistance (Lockout/Tagout), equipment identification, troubleshooting, work request preparation, or other areas as needed.

Working Relationships

The CT Technician reports to the CT Supervisor and takes direction from the management team.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The CT Technician works a rotating 4x10 schedule, alternating between Monday–Thursday and Tuesday–Friday shifts, ensuring continuous plant coverage and support throughout the workweek. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status will also be required.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $38.11 to $56.26 per hour, depending on qualifications as per CBA.

Core Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for a skilled Technician with experience in power generation operations and maintenance, coupled with a proven ability to contribute effectively to team success and consistently meet performance standards.

• An Associate degree in Plant Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related field is preferred. Alternatively, equivalent technical training in industrial maintenance or instrumentation and control is beneficial, though not required. Relevant industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of education on a year-for-year basis.
• Advanced experience in the power generation or industrial maintenance field, specifically involving the operation and maintenance of combustion turbine-generators and auxiliary systems.
• Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), such as Maximo, is preferred, along with a strong understanding of plant safety protocols and environmental regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain combustion turbine-generators and associated auxiliaries, including reading and interpreting meters, gauges, and P&ID diagrams.
• Experience in observing, recording, and evaluating system conditions, with a focus on maintaining operational and maintenance logs to ensure safe equipment operation within prescribed limits.
• Proficiency in overhauling and repairing plant equipment such as turbines, generators, pumps, and compressors, with a commitment to documenting maintenance actions accurately.
• Knowledge of regulatory procedures and facility safety standards, with the ability to handle hazardous materials safely and comply with all applicable regulations.
• Willingness to work shift hours, overtime, or irregular hours as required, while maintaining up-to-date training in First Aid, CPR, OSHA, and other relevant safety programs.
• Ability to support field technicians and collaborate effectively with team members, ensuring efficient execution of maintenance plans and adherence to safety and regulatory compliance programs.
• Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
