Job Description:Position Purpose:
The Electrical Technician will support plant operations by maintenance and repair of all electrical systems, instrumentation and controls and equipment. The Electrical Tech will perform skilled work requiring a high degree of precision and understanding of technical data and systems. May perform work involving the calibration, maintenance and repair of industrial electronic control and monitoring equipment utilized in Wastewater activities. Performs under the general supervision of the Maintenance Manager. Is fully qualified to perform the most complex functions and may lead the work of others.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Calibrates recording devices, dissolved oxygen meters, ultraviolet monitors, flow controls, pneumatic digital system instruments and other related industrial electronic control and perform periodic cleaning, inspection, testing, repairing, and calibration of electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control systems.
- Typical equipment serviced includes temperature and pressure instruments, gages, flow transmitters, switches, solenoids, and control valves.
- Perform repairs and modifications to control circuitry. Install and program electronic instruments.
- Install sensing elements, wiring, tubing and fittings.
- Clean and repair electrical power switching equipment.
- Test, analyze, and troubleshoot electrical power supply circuits.
- Remove, install, clean, and repair, motors, circuit breakers, transformers.
- Create, maintain, and update diagrams, drawings, and plans for plant electrical, electronic, and pneumatic controls and instruments.
- Install, maintain, and calibrate computerized controls and instruments and programmable controllers monitoring equipment.
- Maintains industrial electronic control and monitoring equipment utilized in Wastewater activities.
- Repairs industrial electronic controls (ie: PLC's), Scada systems, and monitoring equipment used in Wastewater activities.
- Develops and implements appropriate systems testing for calibration, diagnosis and documentation of the system performance. Installs and tests new circuitry, sensors and related equipment.
- Coordinates maintenance contracts with equipment manufactures.
- Maintains and adequate spare parts inventory.
- Troubleshoots any problems with industrial electronic control and monitoring equipment including isolation of malfunctions in electronic circuits.
- Assists electricians with repairs and related functions.
- Maintains records of activities in relation to calibrations, repairs and tests.
- Performs preventive maintenance activities on instruments and equipment.
- Installs new circuitry, sensors and related equipment.
Work Environment:
- Spends 100% of time in operations environment.
- Typically spends 10 – 25% of time exposed to outdoor and sometimes inclement weather.
- Company service vehicles are used as required.
- Travels 1 – 2 times per year for company provided training.
- May serve rotational 24-hour emergency on-call.
- Possible Work Hazards: May be exposed to possible operations hazards including fumes, dust, toxic and caustic chemicals, noise, rotating machinery, high pressure and hot and cold temperatures, slippery surfaces, water and electrical hazards.
Education/Experience/Background:
- High school or GED with the ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions) and be able to carry out verbal and written instructions.
- 2 years certificate/diploma in electronics from a recognized College or technical school desirable.
- 1-3 years of experience as electrical technician involving the calibration, maintenance and repair of industrial electronic controls and monitoring equipment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Reasonable knowledge of the principles and procedures of maintenance and repair of electronic equipment.
- Thorough understanding of electrical safety procedures and Lock-Out-Tag-Out procedures.
- Reasonable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of digital control system.
- Knowledge of the electronic systems testing and calibration.
- Skill in the calibration diagnosis and testing of electronic equipment.
- Ability to install maintain and repair electronic equipment and instruments.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems with electronic systems and equipment.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.)
- Must consistently demonstrate the ability to perform all assigned tasks in an organized, accurate and timely manner.
- Good verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge at reading process flow diagrams and control and instrumentation diagrams and interpreting manufacturer's manuals and drawings.
- Must have ability to operate Computer Maintenance Management System (software).
- Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- Vocational training and mechanical aptitude required, with the ability to read, interpret and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computer consoles and other equipment.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license (commercial license and heavy equipment operator license is desirable) and a safe driving record.
- Employee Orientation, Departmental Operating Procedures, Safety, OSHA and Quality Training.
- Obtain or maintain HVAC, Electronics, Plumber’s or other trade License if assigned to that area.
- Note: Tech will not perform duties unless properly licensed.
- Forklift Certification if required by site.
- May perform more advanced functions as part of training and development.
Physical Requirements:
- Amount of time spent – Standing 25%, Walking 75% for as many as five miles per shift.
- Requires close visual and hearing observation to detect non-conformance and machine malfunction.
- Constantly uses hands to finger, handle or feel and frequently reaches with hands and arms.
- Works in various positions; works on ladders, catwalks, and supports at heights of 50 feet above the ground; and works with hands extended above and below head and body up to 40 minutes using hand tools weighing up to 15 pounds.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds (occasionally 60 pounds) distances of 10 feet.
- Occasional stooping, bending or kneeling and entering confined spaces.
