Position Description
Position Title: Part-time School Police Officer
Schedule: This position requires a significant amount of flexibility due to events that take place on evenings and weekends, as well as coverage needed when full-time SPO is out. Core schedule will be as follows: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11am-7:30pm and Friday, 10am - 3:30pm.
Qualifications:
The School Police Officer must satisfy one of the following:
Successful completion of basic training as required by the Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (“MPOETC” also known as “Act 120 training”);
Graduation from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy;
Employment with the Pennsylvania State Police and separation from that employment in good standing; or
Successful completion of the Basic School Resource Officer Course offered by the National Association of School Resource Officers or an equivalent course of instruction approved by MPOETC.
The school police officer must attend annual in-service training approved by the MPOETC, which includes maintaining firearms and first aid/CPR qualifications.
The school police officer must satisfy the background check requirements under Sections 111 and 111.1 of the Public School Code and 23 Pa.C.S. § 6344 (relating to employees having contact with or supervision of children).
Has the ability to make decisions.
Must possess and display the ability to follow directives and adhere to the established chain of command.
Must be dependable, punctual, flexible, and able to manage time appropriately.
Must maintain a professional and courteous demeanor with staff, students and the general public
Must possess effective communication, judgment, planning, organization, problem-solving, and human relations skills.
Employment is contingent upon appointment being approved by a Pennsylvania court.
Reports To/Supervised By: Director of Career and Technical Education
Responsibilities:
Upholds the duties, responsibilities, and oath of a law enforcement officer, including adhering to the laws of the Commonwealth related to police powers as well as the policies of LCTI and all LCTI School Police Officer Procedures.
Establishes and maintains positive relationships with the LCTI community to ensure safety.
Provides security to LCTI, specifically its students, employees, visitors, and others utilizing LCTI facilities when needed and by working collaboratively with LCTI administration to do so.
Protects school buildings, grounds and other school facilities.
Refers students and their families to the appropriate agencies for assistance when a need is determined and maintains professional working relationships with those agencies.
Patrols schools grounds and appropriate parameters to ensure safety and prevent illegal acts.
Controls traffic patterns caused by the use of school buildings
Responds to and investigates safety concerns in accordance with LCTI policy, procedures, and related directives from his/her supervisor.
Takes appropriate and timely action in the event of emergencies and makes appropriate and timely contacts.
Adheres to emergency management training and related directives for responding to reported emergencies, including but not limited to safe de-escalation and restraint practices.
Controls the use of school property ensuring all persons adhere to hours established for usage, and any and all rules that may apply.
Participates in and attends training as designated by LCTI or the Joint Operating Committee.
Works varying schedules when staffing issues exist.
Wears appropriate or designated attire in accordance with statutory requirements or JOC policies and procedures.
Appears and testifies at expulsion hearings, Magisterial and court proceedings.
Carries out duties and assignments designated by the Security Coordinator, school building administration and Executive Director.
Helps train school staff as needed.
Provides direction and supervision to security staff/contractors.
Investigates incidents that occur on LCTI property.
Operates a school vehicle within the assigned geographic area and/or at the direction of the supervisor.
Investigates all complaints assigned to him/her and takes suitable action.
Has and appropriate utilizes the power of arrest
Searches individuals and their personal property after taking them into custody in compliance with legal requirements and school policies and procedures.
Detains arrested persons, as required, in accordance with legal requirements and school policies and procedures.
Assists in the securing of crime scenes and in the gathering and processing of evidence.
Attends annual in-service training approved by the MPOETC, which includes maintaining firearms and first aid/CPR qualifications.
Advises and participates in Crime Prevention
Performs other duties and related tasks as assigned by the Director of Career and Technical Education or designee.

Must be able to attend evening meetings, as needed.
