Veterinary Technician Assistant

Reports To: Veterinary Tech Leads and Veterinary Technician Assistant Managers

Primarily responsible for helping all members of the staff. This includes assisting in all areas of the hospital to provide the best possible care for patients during their time at the hospital. This position is responsible for assisting in the stocking and cleaning of the hospital. This position holds an essential role in communication and organization between all team members. These technicians are responsible for maintaining excellence in patient care under the supervision of the veterinary technicians.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Beginning of shift:

• Check with technicians for tasks that need to be completed.

• Clean and walk patients.

• Prepare requested diets for in house patients.

• Record diet intake and U/BM/V/D on treatment sheets.

• Check with the overnight technician to find out what patients are being admitted for procedures and what needs to be prepped for these patients.

• Prepare cages for patients that are being dropped off for procedures.

• Assist with admitting patients that are being dropped off for procedures.

Daily:

• Assist with restraining patients for treatments/procedures.

• Clean cages of patients when they are discharged.

• Assist in preparing patients for discharge.

• Perform any baths requested.

• Communicate with all members of the staff.

• Complete all the orders in an accurate and timely manner.

• Prepare samples to go out to the lab.

• Assist with in house lab work.

• Assist with restraint for radiographs.

• Assist with restraint for venipuncture.

• Clean areas in between patients.

• Report inventory needs an appropriate team member.

• General patient restraint.

• Prepare patient cages for recovery.

• Complete all items on the Technician Assistant task list.

Technical Skills:

• Administering medication by oral route.

• Monitoring patient status - TPR, MM, CRT, mentation, and U/BM/V/D.

• Recognizing pain and notifying a Doctor or Technician.

• Oral dose calculations.

• Basic wound care.

• Basic physical therapy.

• Ability to assist with CPR.

• Pharmacology of common drugs.

• Basic knowledge of diseases and surgical procedures.

• Computer input into patient’s files.

• Provide aseptic techniques to the workplace.

• Ability to fill prescriptions.

• Ability to run basic in house blood tests.

• Preparation of samples to be sent to the lab.

• Ability to assist in positioning and developing chest and abdominal radiographs.

Hospital Maintenance:

• Maintain AAHA standards in the general Practice in conjunction with the Clinical Manager.

Other:

• Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor and/or management staff.

• Adhering to all AVH policies and procedures.

• Attending all supervision and staff meetings as assigned.

• Completing any required internal training or continuing education (CEs) required by AVH, or as required by federal, state and/or local licensing/certification boards.

Essential Functions:

• Must be able to ambulate/move and bend/stand for 90% of the time.

• Must be able to move supplies and patients up to 50 pounds.

• Must be able to use Fear-Free techniques to restrain patients.

• Must have the ability to work in a hospital setting, which includes:

  • Exposure to potential caustic agents, medical grade radiation, and cleaning products.

  • Exposure to zoonotic diseases and wounds potentially inflicted by patients.

  • Exposure to moderate to loud noises (such as barking).
