The position is responsible for managing the maintenance, testing and repair of a variety of instrumentation and equipment. The primary job is to make sure that instruments, gauges and testing devices are identified, calibrated correctly and give accurate readings. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

• Manage calibrated equipment transition through building move(s) to verify each location has sufficient tools to operate

• Review current practices to improve efficiency of Calibration Technician team

• Create metrics for monitoring team performance and output

• Research advances in calibration techniques and present application to current processes

• Process improvement and training for maintaining use of in-house gages

• Report practical recommendations and an assessment of any return on investment

• Collect and organize technical data from equipment manufacturers, equipment users and engineering personnel

• Interact with Manufacturing, Laboratory, and Maintenance, Metrology and Engineering staff members as well as other internal/external customers and vendors

• Review and confirm completion of purchase orders in our ERP system

• Gather Quotations for and purchase Gages and other calibrated items needed for manufacturing

• Manage Vendor Loans of Gages Policy and process for manufacturing

• Store and maintain Gage inventory as well as other calibrated items

• Perform calibrations and scheduled preventive maintenance

• Quickly identify and troubleshoot measurement errors

• Compile, measure, and record data from each instrument for other technicians and managers to review

• Assist with commissioning of manufacturing equipment to ensure proper installation, operation, and performance qualification • Oversee the daily operations of the Calibration team, ensuring efficient and effective performance as the technical expert

• Conduct annual performance reviews and participate in interviews

• Prepare updates and presentations as needed

• Monitor and manage department priorities, attendance, performance, and training

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

• Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.

• Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments. The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Requirements

Qualifications Experience:

• Minimum 5 years of experience in quality control function in manufacturing environment preferred

• Optics or Manufacturing inspection experience preferred

Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Physics or equivalent field, or equivalent work experience

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Ability to learn, understand, and effectively apply sampling plans

• Skilled in the usage of handheld measuring tools and devices including but not limited to calipers and micrometers

• Good verbal and written communication skills to operate in both individual and team environments

• Capable of reading mechanical drawings and interpret dimensional tolerances

• Adaptable to process and procedure changes

• Capacity to convert from imperial to metric measurements

• Ability to meet department standards for productivity and quality

• Computer literacy using MS Office, Outlook and ERP software is mandatory.

• Must have the ability to cross train on all areas of the department, including but not limited to visual and dimensional inspection, data entry, laser engravers, and metrology equipment

• High attention to detail

The salary range for this position is  $92,232.64 - $94,000  D.O.E.
