TEGNA, the parent company of 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, is hiring a Data Journalist–Reporter uses data to find, report, and tell stories that hold institutions accountable and help audiences understand the forces shaping their lives.
This role works closely with the Data Producer & Researcher, the Data Visualization Specialist, contributing beat reporters, local market newsrooms, and the Product team. The Data Journalist–Reporter publishes both independently and collaboratively, producing a mix of quick-turn and enterprise data-driven reporting across platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Report and write stories independently and in collaboration with other reporters.
- Collect, clean, analyze, and visualize datasets to surface meaningful trends and insights.
- Publish a mix of quick-turn explainers and enterprise or investigative reporting.
- Pitch data-driven stories that are compelling, relevant, and accountability-focused.
- Identify and pursue stories with the potential for real-world impact.
- Use data to move stories beyond anecdotes and into evidence-based reporting.
- Add context, scale, and verification to breaking news coverage.
- Translate complex data findings into clear, accessible journalism.
- Use AI-assisted tools to support data reporting.
- Work with the Data Analyst & Researcher to validate findings and ensure accuracy.
- Collaborate with contributing beat reporters to incorporate subject-matter expertise.
- Partner with local market newsrooms to localize enterprise data stories.
- Work with the Product team to support data-driven storytelling and tools.
- Use audience analytics to understand reader and subscriber needs.
Help shape coverage based on audience trends and performance.
Salary range: $95,000 - $115,000
Qualifications
- 3 – 5 years proven experience as a reporter, preferably with data-driven or investigative work.
- Strong writing and reporting skills across platforms.
- Experience working with data using spreadsheets and/or basic SQL, Python, or R.
- Solid statistical literacy and ability to explain findings clearly.
- Familiarity with public records and FOIA.
- Collaborative mindset and comfort working across teams.
