Description
The Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining manual and CNC lathes used in the production of fiberglass composite components. This role involves machining cylindrical and tapered parts to blueprint specifications, performing quality inspections, and maintaining adherence to safety and quality standards. The operator must follow detailed work instructions, maintain accurate records, and collaborate with team members to achieve production goals.
Requirements
Duties & Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual and CNC lathes to produce composite parts to precise tolerances.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, shop routers, and work instructions.
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, and accessories for each job.
- Monitor machining processes, making necessary adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
- Perform inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
- Troubleshoot out-of-tolerance conditions or equipment issues and escalate to supervision as required.
- Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and cleaning of lathes to ensure optimal performance.
- Maintain accurate production, inspection, and scrap records as required by the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Adhere to all safety standards including lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE use, and proper handling of composite materials.
- Monitor and achieve established Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as production output, quality standards, efficiency, and safety compliance, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with company goals.
- Keep work area clean and organized to prevent safety hazards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education & Training
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSE).
- Technical training or certification in machining/manufacturing preferred.
Knowledge & Experience
- 2+ years of experience operating manual and/or CNC lathes in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 or other quality management systems.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints.
- Strong knowledge of precision measuring instruments and quality inspection techniques.
Skills & Abilities
- Good mechanical aptitude and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to solve machining-related problems and make process adjustments.
- Frequently required to reach and use hands and arms continuously.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

Hours / Shifts: This is a 2nd shift position.
1st Shift: Monday through Friday 7:00am – 3:00pm EST
2nd Shift: Monday through Friday 3:00pm – 11:00pm EST
3rd Shift: Sunday through Friday 11:00pm – 7:00am EST
Hours and shifts may vary depending on needs of the department.
