Two (2) positions, #0082911T and #0085755T, non-tenure, 11-month, temporary, full-time positions funded by G funds as appropriated by SB1252. To begin on January 6, 2025, pending position clearance and availability of funds and annually renewable for up to 2 years, depending on performance and/or funding availability.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • To coordinate and incorporate training on Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia for health care providers into existing University of Hawaii health professions programs;
  • Review, update, and develop a dementia curriculum to be incorporated into appropriate existing University of Hawaii health professions and health science programs to establish a local, informed dementia workforce;
  • Work with the Department Chair and other stakeholders to write and submit annual reports to the legislature on the progress of developing a coordinated aging and dementia curricular focus, which includes interprofessional and interdisciplinary education as appropriate
  • Under general supervision, this position will be responsible for teaching, research, and clinical activities.
  • Teaching duties:
    • Provide didactic teaching and clinical supervision to students, residents, fellows, and allied health professionals
    • Serve as academic advisor and/or research mentor to students, residents, and fellows; 
  • Service/Clinical:
    • Serve on University committees;
    • Clinical duties will include participation in the department’s clinical teaching programs at one of JABSOM’s affiliated clinical sites, which may include nursing homes, hospitals, home care settings, and clinic facilities. They may include some night and weekend calls.
  • Scholarship:
    • Develop an academic career in Geriatric Medicine, including abstract presentations and publications on geriatrics topics;
    • Contribute to the department’s robust Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement initiatives in clinical settings.
    • Develop research and/or medical education grant-funded projects; 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school;
  • Eligible for unrestricted Hawaii medical license;
  • Eligible for federal and state narcotics licenses;
  • Board certified (within seven (7) years) or qualified to become board certified in Internal Medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine) or Family Medicine (American Board of Family Medicine);
  • Fellowship training and board eligibility or certification in Geriatric Medicine;
  • Participation in medical student, resident, and/or fellow teaching;
  • Participation in  research, scholarly activity, or clinical administration; 
  • Demonstrated interest and expertise in dementia;
  • Sincere interest and experience in the care of older patients;
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and interdisciplinary communication and teaming skills


Assistant Professor Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in a multicultural environment.


Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • Same as Assistant Professor plus:
  • Minimum of four (4) years at the rank of Assistant Professor or four (4) years of other medical experience or a minimum of one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another accredited medical school.
  • Maintaining Geriatrics board certification
  • Evidence of excellent patient care in a collaborative environment.
  • Evidence of effective research and scholarly activity (i.e., recent publications in peer-reviewed journals or regional/national presentations), or medical education administration.
  • Experience in academic and/or clinical program administration.
  • Evidence of excellent team building and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience functioning in a complex system of multiple organizations and stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements.


Associate Professor Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in a multicultural environment
  • Departmental or division leadership experience in an academic medical center.
  • Managerial experience in healthcare administration, medical management, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor faculty.
  • Development of innovative medical education courses or curricula, clinical programs, research programs, or community-based programs to meet the needs of populations served by geriatricians
  • Leadership in preparing for LCME or ACGME accreditation.


Professor Minimum Qualifications

  • Same as Associate Professor plus:
  • Minimum of four (4) years at the rank of Associate Professor or a minimum of one year at the rank of Professor at another accredited medical school or ten (10) years of other health care experience, or a total of ten (10) years of teaching in the rank of Associate Professor and other health care experience.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, national or international recognition as a scholar, and effective medical education and/or clinical program administration. 


Professor Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in a multicultural environment.
  • Senior departmental or division leadership experience in an academic medical center, with evidence of mentoring faculty.
  • Managerial experience in healthcare administration, medical management, or equivalent.
  • Experience in strategic planning.
  • Development of innovative medical education courses or curricula, comprehensive clinical programs, research programs, or community-based programs to meet the needs of populations served by general or subspecialty family physicians
  • Leadership in preparing for LCME or ACGME accreditation.
