About the Department

The Mechanic helps ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of campus facilities, supporting a high-quality learning and working environment. This position involves a blend of repair, maintenance, and operational tasks, with a primary focus on HVAC and Building Automation Systems (BAS). The Mechanic also assists with procurement, assembles furniture, operates large-scale snow removal equipment, and provides critical on-call support during campus emergencies.

This position reports to the campus Facilities Manager.

Position Duties

Preventative Maintenance and Building Systems Operations

  • Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC, radiant heaters, chillers, air handlers, and rooftop units.

  • Follow maintenance schedules for filter replacement, motor lubrication, belt replacement, and coil cleaning.

  • Operate and monitor the Building Automation System (BAS) to troubleshoot issues and optimize energy performance.

  • Conduct regular inspections and testing of building life-safety systems, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, and fire extinguishers.

  • Maintain detailed maintenance logs and ensure all work complies with safety and environmental standards.

  • Respond promptly and effectively to scheduled and emergency maintenance requests to minimize downtime and maintain building operations.

Additional Responsibilities and Support Functions
  • Operate and maintain snow removal equipment and college vehicles to ensure safe and reliable performance.

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices through ongoing training and development opportunities.

  • Provide backup support to custodial staff and assist with general facility upkeep as needed.

  • Conduct building checks during weekends, holidays, or shutdown periods as assigned.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support departmental and institutional goals.

MECHANIC LEAD (ONLY):

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement:
  • Lead, mentor, and coordinate the maintenance team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality completion of daily operations and campus projects.

  • Collaborate with the Facilities Manager to plan and implement continuous improvements that enhance building performance, energy efficiency, and operational reliability.

  • Liaise with suppliers and contractors to obtain quotes, procure materials, and oversee building repairs and maintenance work under supervisor direction.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Proficient in any combination of HVAC and facilities maintenance with an emphasis in energy management and operation of building automation systems 

OR 

  • A combination of course work or experience of the below specialties.

    • HVAC Systems

    • Facilities Maintenance

    • Plumbing

    • Building Electrical System

    • Building Automation Systems (preferred)

PLUS

  • Third Class Power Plant Operating Engineer's License issued by the American Society of Power Engineers, Inc. OR the ability to obtain within the first 12 months of hire. (Documentation Required of License with application) 
  • Forklift certification OR the ability to obtain within the first 3 months of hire
Other required knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written format; read, understand and follow instructions.
    Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to maintain schedules; perform the physical requirements for the position including climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, reaching, and standing for long periods of time; lift and carry boxes, tools, equipment and materials.

  • Ability to work safely and follow OSHA compliance with hazard communication and safe work practice.

  • Operate mechanical cleaning equipment such as carpet extractors, high-speed buffers and scrubbers.

  • Ability to operate and maintain forklift, floor jack, snow removal and other District-owned vehicles and equipment.
