Senior Faculty Affairs Consultant

Office of Faculty Affairs and Career Development (OFACD)
The University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine (SOM) invites applications for a Senior Faculty Affairs Consultant to join the Office of Faculty Affairs and Career Development (OFACD). We are seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented, organized, and customer service-driven professional with strong attention to detail to support and enhance faculty operations and success at the School of Medicine.

 

Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Senior Faculty Affairs Consultant provides counsel, advice, and support to faculty, staff, administrators, and leadership within the Health Sciences Center (HSC) and SOM. This position is responsible for interpreting and advising on UNM and HSC policies, procedures, and best practices across all areas of faculty affairs.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strong leadership by collaborating directly with senior departmental faculty and administrators to triage and respond to inquiries effectively resolving issues related to faculty contracts, salary and incentive changes, and secondary titles. Skillfully address matters concerning leaves by determining eligibility and faculty meet policy criteria. Oversees all sabbatical assignments and reviews, ensures all documentation meets criteria for Deans approval
  • Oversees and monitors the day-to-day activities of operations specialist and faculty affairs consultant. Meets with the operations specialist weekly to review workload and provides resources for growth. Meets weekly with the faculty affairs consultant to review inquires from departments and faculty to resolve issues. Involved in staff performance reviews providing training and mentoring on each subject from HR to LATs. Meets with the staff to review SOPs to ensure they are updated and job duties are being completed effectively. Provides comprehensive internal orientation, training, and ongoing support, ensuring that the team is well-equipped to perform their roles successfully and maintain high standards of work.
  • Oversees all of the trainings for the Department Administrators and Medical faculty services representative based on the upcoming reviews and promotions and LAT deadlines. Coordinates and delivers in-service and general training on promotion and tenure criteria, all types of leaves faculty are eligible for, CE reviews, Mid probationary, annual performance, flex track, part-time reviews. Oversees the Letter of Academic training to include renewals, new appointments and promotions
  • Provides expert guidance for faculty searches by serving as the search coordinator on high level searches to ensure they meet all compliance with institutional policies and hiring guidelines. Serves as the primary contact for all internal searches working directly with the Senior Associate Dean, Dean and search committee to recruit excellent candidates. In addition, manages external national searches with the director for all Chair and Dean searches.
  • Serves as the interim director in the absence of the Director by overseeing operational matters to include meeting with staff to ensure job duties are completed and provides guidance on any issues that arise. Reviews letters of offer and equity working directly with the Senior Associate Dean to ensure deadlines are Works with SOM leadership on any concerns that surface in the director’s absence. Approves staff leave, timekeeping and financial chrome river expenses.
  • Exercise sound judgment and decision-making in sensitive, confidential matters
  • Facilitate staff onboarding and training workshops to include faculty QuickStart orientation
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure policy compliance
  • Commit to supporting a diverse, inclusive, and equitable academic environment

This position serves as a subject matter expert on faculty HR matters, ensuring compliance, responding to inquiries, and communicating updates to policies and procedures.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong leadership collaborating directly with senior departmental faculty and administrators to effectively resolve issues related to faculty affairs.
  • Oversees and monitors the day-to-day activities of staff weekly review workload, training and mentoring staff.
  • Experience guiding SOM senior leadership and department administrators on critical issues such as faculty contracts, leave policies, and promotion and tenure eligibility and criteria.
  • Experience overseeing payroll processes and deadlines related to contract changes, collaborating seamlessly with payroll consultants to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Background managing faculty searches working directly with the leadership and search committee to recruit excellent candidates.
  • Proficient in managing accurate records, maintaining confidential information and ensure policy compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with strong interpersonal skills
