Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Director of Human Resources is responsible for developing, managing, administering, and coordinating all human resources functions for the organization. This includes oversight of recruitment, employee relations, performance management, benefits administration, and compliance with employment laws and regulations. The Newberry is a unionized workplace, and the Director plays a key role in labor relations, including contract administration and collaboration with union representatives. In conjunction with the Controller and Staff Accountant, the Director also oversees payroll operations.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Design, implement, and administer all compensation and benefit programs;

· Oversee payroll administration, working with the Staff Accountant to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant processing in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations;

· Partner with hiring supervisors to administer and manage all aspects of recruitment, including internship programs;

· Maintain full-life cycle employee reporting and HR data systems;

· Maintain, refine, and apply policies within the employee handbook and collective bargaining agreement, ensuring fair and consistent application of all policies;

· Respond to employee relation issues and advise department managers on all personnel matters, including grievances, harassment claims, compensation reviews, and other issues as they arise;

· Maintain up-to-date knowledge of labor standards, applicable laws and regulations, and HR best practices, ensuring compliance and reporting requirements, such as EEO-1 and 5500;

· Assess training needs and implement programs that support employee growth, retention, and organizational effectiveness; develop and conduct new hire orientation and employee trainings;

· Manage the human resources department budget and administer departmental purchasing;

· Oversee staff social event planning and lead initiatives, programs, and training that strengthen employee engagement and morale;

· Serve as thought partner to the Vice President of Finance and Administration on developing and implementing organizational goals, objectives, and systems improvements;

· Manage special projects and all other related tasks or activities as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

· Bachelor's degree in human resources or related field or equivalent experience;

· Minimum seven years of progressive leadership experience in human resources;

· Knowledge and experience in all major areas of human resources including employment law, recruitment, benefits administration, compensation, performance management, employee relations, safety, and training and development;

· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and HR systems required;

· Experience working in a union environment and/or nonprofit organization strongly preferred;

· PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or equivalent certification preferred;

· Experience with HRIS platforms and data analytics for decision-making;

· Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion;

· Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in a team environment and to balance multiple projects

· Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to coach others and foster collaboration

· Analytical and problem-solving mindset, with sound judgment and strategic thinking in creating improvement and implementing change

· Clear and effective communicator, adaptable and detail-oriented, with a commitment to continuous learning
