About the Department
Provides reference and readers' advisory services according to established guidelines and library policies and principles, and acts as second in command to the branch librarian in overseeing one library branch of the library system

Position Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Assists with the responsibilities of the branch librarian and performs any of these responsibilities in the absence of the branch librarian
- Provides reader's advisory and reference service
- Provides light computer assistance to patrons and staff, including public PCs and the use of the online catalog
- Provides assistance to patrons with eBranch items
- Provides assistance to patrons with Maker Space items as needed/relevant
- Works with the branch librarian and other professional staff to select materials for the collection and weed collection regularly
- Answers patron purchase suggestions with the support of appropriate collection development staff in rotation with other reference librarians
- Answers emailed reference questions in rotation with other reference librarians
- Interprets and implements library policies and procedures for library users and staff; assumes supervisory responsibilities when assigned
- Identifies educational or informational needs within their community and works to provide appropriate instruction classes, programs, and outreach
- Helps to monitor computer problems and report these to the appropriate staff members
- Plans, executes, and evaluates adult programming
- Works with outside entities to provide various types of outreach for adults
- Works with the branch librarian to mediate room bookings and troubleshoot the Springshare products
- Supervises, schedules, and evaluates shelving staff members
- Attends and participates in professional activities, conferences, and committees
- Maintains an awareness of professional trends, methods, and ethics
- Performs other work as needed
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises shelvers; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws under the direction and guidance of the branch librarian. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems with the approval of the branch librarian.
Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Master's Degree (M.S.) in Library Science from an accredited college or university, and 2 years of supervisory experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and/or familiarity with library practices, specifically OCLC Cataloging
Skill in effectively meeting and dealing with the general public
Skill in working with automated library systems
Skill in composing and drafting letters, memoranda, and other correspondence
Strong organizational skills, good interpersonal skills, and supervisory skills
Ability to solve problems
Ability to work independently
Must provide own safe automobile for transportation in carrying out job duties

Valid Texas Driver's License

This job takes place within a library environment and in an automobile on county roads and streets. Inside the libraries, the noise level is very low. The noise level can be loud while driving on the roads and streets. Outside weather conditions may fluctuate from extremely hot (above 90 degrees) to cold (below 30 degrees). In outdoor conditions, employees may frequently be exposed to high humidity, hot sunlight, and/or rain, hazardous road conditions, and gasoline fumes. In outdoor conditions, employees may occasionally be exposed to hail, sleet, and/or snow.
SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent in this job must be knowledgeable about and follow the county's safety policies and procedures, and be responsible for teaching safety requirements to subordinate employees. Employees must follow safety road signs, maintain a safe speed, and drive cautiously at all times, paying strict attention to road conditions and maintaining alertness while operating the county automobile.
