Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Holistic Support, the Accessibility & Starfish Manager/Counselor provides comprehensive mental health and personal counseling services to support student well-being, adjustment, and academic success. The position also serves as the Coordinator of the Office of Accessibility and Resources (OARS), ensuring equitable access and appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities while promoting awareness and inclusion across campus. In addition, the Accessibility & Starfish Manager/Counselor functions as the primary manager of the Starfish retention system, coordinating data-driven interventions, monitoring student progress, and collaborating with faculty and staff to improve persistence and completion outcomes.

Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Counseling Services

  • Provide comprehensive counseling services to students including but not limited to assistance with planning and problem solving in academic and educational matters, short-term crisis counseling, and provide referral information for further mental health counseling.

  • Work with the Academic Advisor/Counselor to monitor and assess the needs of the campus’s overall mental health and provide services as needed.

OARS Coordinator

  • Serve as the ADA coordinator for the College

  • Work with faculty to ensure equal access and accommodations for students with special needs.

  • Serve as a liaison for people with disabilities on various boards and committees.

  • Coordinate awareness activities.

  • Inventory community resources that could be helpful with student needs, develop functional liaisons with those agencies, and initiate referrals.

Starfish

  • Assume primary responsibility for the Starfish software to support the success and retention of Hispanic, low-income, and at-risk students by anticipating needs, addressing barriers, and ensuring effective system utilization.

  • Retrieve, analyze, and prepare reports for institutional leaders; collaborate with faculty and staff to develop and refine data collection, tracking, and reporting strategies that enhance Starfish deployment and support institutional goals.

  • Inventory and assess campus data sources for accuracy, relevance, and integration into Starfish, optimizing existing reports and ensuring data-driven decision-making.

  • Identify and track students participating in Starfish cohorts; monitor their engagement with support services such as advising, tutoring, and financial aid; communicate with students as needed to promote persistence and success.

  • Schedule and lead Starfish meetings and training sessions for faculty and staff; resolve minor technical issues; and use various software tools to manage retention resources, correspondence, and related materials.

Record Maintenance

  • Maintain records to track student progress and ensure that appropriate data is included in the student data management or tracking system.

Administrative

  • Maintain and monitor budget, submit required reports.

  • Participate in committees, councils and professional development activities as assigned.

  • Provide staff development workshops. 

  • Complete and submit reports as required.

  • Assist the Director of Holistic Support with initiatives as needed.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals from varying backgrounds.

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires frequent and continuous sitting/moving about, continuous use of fine motor skills, and pushing and pulling of up to 20 lbs.

SCHEDULE DETAILS:  

Must be available to work 40 hrs. per week with normal work hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in counseling or a related field is required.

  • Must obtain NM Counseling licensure within six (6) months from date of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in higher education environment related to student development or counseling is preferred.
