The pharmacy unit plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and effective use of medications for patients. The unit is responsible for dispensing medications accurately and efficiently, maintaining comprehensive medication inventory and control, including narcotics and controlled substances. This includes selecting, calculating, measuring, preparing (both sterile and non-sterile), packaging, labeling, charging, and crediting various pharmacy products like intravenous medications. In addition, the pharmacy ensures compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
How you’ll contribute
A Pharmacist who excels in this role will:
- Provide clinical pharmacy information—respond to requests for clinical pharmacy information originating from the attending and resident medical staff, the Nursing Service, and other clinical departments and/or patients.
- Serve on institutional patient care committees, complete assigned projects and provide information as directed by Committee Chairpersons or the pharmacy management.
- Supervise and direct activities of pharmacy technicians, students, and other support staff.
- Assist with plans and projects of the Department, including assuming responsibility for at least one aspect of distributive or clinical pharmacy processes as assigned by pharmacy management.
- Interpret and evaluate pharmacotherapy—routinely review appropriateness/effectiveness of patient medications per physician request, as part of a routine patient medication profile review, or per protocol directed activities; When appropriate, recommend cost effective drug therapy alternatives.
- Document pharmacist interventions in the electronic health record.
- Promote adherence to the hospital formulary.
- Assist in the reconciliation of patients’ home medications with hospital medications.
- Supervise/participate in the in-patient and outpatient medication distribution process:
- document drug therapy by maintaining patient specific medication profile.
- dispense medications.
- prepare compounded doses, including sterile products.
- issue drug stock supplies.
- assure proper labeling.
- assure timeliness of services.
- assure patient charge justification.
- effectively utilize automated pharmacy information management systems.
- assist in maintenance of pharmacy information management system.
- maintain dispensing records in accordance with all applicable law/regulations.
- dispense and assure the perpetual inventory justification process for DEA Schedule II drugs.
- inspect and certify proper drug storage.
- assist in inventory control.
- direct pharmacy operations when designated.
- recognize, report adverse drug reactions and medication errors.

What we’re looking for
Applicants should have a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Pharmacy Doctorate or foreign graduate equivalent.
Licensed as a pharmacist in Pennsylvania.
