What You Will Be Doing:

  • Have considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of an institutional general maintenance.
  • Prioritize and assign work orders; assign job duties to work crews and contractors, review work to ensure jobs are completed satisfactorily.
  • Respond to emergencies; major equipment failure such as boiler problems, refrigeration and freezers, HVAC, Fire Alarm System, Sewage, Water or Electrical failure during and after normal working hours.
  • The incumbent must be available to respond by radio or telephone to initiate appropriate action in a timely manner to protect human health, safety, and welfare.
  • Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

You will be working at Mat-Su Pretrial (MSPT), which is operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Mandatory overtime may be required if an emergency requires it.


Who We Are Looking For:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, benefits, repair, operation, and maintenance.
  • Building and Construction: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: Uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.

Position Duties

Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments.

This job class is part of a series of competency-based class specifications created for career areas within the Labor, Trades, and Crafts Unit. The class specification identifies the levels of work and wage grades within the career area, the core and specific competencies of the career area, required work behaviors, certifications, and physical requirements.

RECRUITMENT DIFFICULTIES

Starting salary may be approved up to Step D - $32.24, if criteria are met.

It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

If using work experience not already documented in your application, also provide the employer name, your job title, dates of employment, and whether full-or part-time. PREA NOTIFICATION

The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:

  • Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;
  • Convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or,
  • Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.

 

CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS

Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.

 

FINGERPRINT NOTICE

All Department of Corrections employees are required to be fingerprinted. The successful candidate must pass a criminal history check.

 

DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.
