ABOUT OUR Y:
Our Y is one of Southern California’s leading charitable organizations dedicated to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
MISSION:
The mission of the YMCA of the Foothills is to organize, develop, finance, and conduct programs for an association of persons of all ages that will, by putting Christian principles into practice, enrich the quality of their lives spiritually, mentally, physically, and socially.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Lead and guide a group of youth in meaningful, safe programs and activities that allow and provide for the best possible experience. This position is focused on nurturing the potential of youth using a variety of tools including the Y voice and core values.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Under the direction of the Youth Development Coordinator/Leader/Director, the Youth Engagement Staff will implement both structured and unstructured programming to engage youth, foster healthy growth and provide opportunities for youth to succeed and develop leadership skills.
- Work with Youth Development leadership and project teams (Youth Development, Healthy Living, Social Responsibility) in an effort to deliver a more welcoming environment to provide a fun, safe and productive environment for youths in Y facilities.
- Provide opportunities for youth to succeed, develop, and strengthen academic, physical, and social skills.
- Create leadership development opportunities for youth in order to help them find focus and to build a “blueprint” for life and to discover and cultivate their SPARK.
- Provide clear leadership to youth members by consistently supervising activities, confidently drawing boundaries, enforcing rules, educating and supporting acceptable behavior.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled and required.
- Adhere to YMCA program standards regarding safety and risk management.
- Act as representative of the YMCA of the Foothills at all times.
- Convey information on programs and schedules and refer members to other programs, as appropriate.
- Articulate the mission, cause and rally cry of the YMCA of the Foothills.
- Support other Y staff and volunteers by building strong relationships using Y tools, such as Listen First, in all interactions.
- Convey information on YMCA of the Foothills charitable initiatives.
- Maintain positive relations and rapport with members, staff and volunteers at all times.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, emergencies, dress guidelines and cleanliness standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum one (1) year experience working or participating in a youth group/program setting. YMCA program participation preferred.
- Proven ability to coordinate, implement and/or lead enrichment/recreational activities.
- Self-starter who is committed and possesses good communication and teamwork skills.
- Knowledge of youth development practices and conflict mediation.
- Energetic, youth-friendly and creative person with a high level of enthusiasm about providing meaningful opportunities and activities for youth.
- Proven ability to work with people from a variety of different ethnic, socio-economic, educational, religious, sexual and generational backgrounds. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date unless otherwise specified below.
- YUSA training: Principles of Youth Development within 30 days of hire.
- Possess imagination, a sense of humor, patience, conviction, sincerity, enthusiasm, initiative, self-control, adaptability, willingness to learn, integrity, and ingenuity.
- Must have commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA and uphold its values and ethics.
- Must be able to model the core values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.
- Must possess the four essential characteristics for dealing with the growth of youth into adulthood: good health, intelligence, moral character, and personality.
- Ability to follow and accept instruction and relate well with peers.
- Familiarity working with schools and community-based agencies preferred.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
- Previous YMCA volunteer experience preferred.
