The Public Works Department is actively seeking a Carpenter.

This is skilled craft work in the construction, alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings and fixtures. The work requires knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in carpentry which involves the use of specialized skills or specialized equipment which is learned on the job or through specialized training. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, including contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by procedures or precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow. The work is performed inside and outside where there are some risks and hazards, but they are predictable and controllable. Operates hand and power tools and motor vehicles. The physical demands consist of walking, standing, sitting, bending, moving and lifting equipment and ladders weighing more than fifty (50) pounds, working from heights and including exposure to dust, dirt, and other unpleasant conditions. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set priorities subject to superior’s approval.
Position Duties
- Constructs, alters, and repairs concrete forms, floors, stairways, roofs, partitions, doors, windows, screens, and wood fixtures.
- Designs and builds bookcases, chests, lockers, cabinets, and shelves.
- Cleans, sharpens, and repairs hand and bench tools.
- Repairs mechanical doors and locks.
- Performs masonry, glazing, roofing, and sheet metal work including forming and pouring concrete.
- Operate carpentry equipment and tools including ladders.
- Operates a motor vehicle.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles including one-half and one-ton trucks and vans.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in carpentry.
- Knowledge of the equipment, materials, and tools used in carpentry.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Skill in the care and use of materials, tools, and equipment used in carpentry.
- Ability to read and apply job related materials.
- Ability to work from sketches and blueprints.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Other Qualifications
- Two (2) years of education and/or experience involving carpentry.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.
- Depending upon assignment, must pass the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background screening performed by the Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office prior to appointment.
- Within thirty (30) days of appointment date to classification, acquire and maintain the appropriate level of Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) certification which corresponds to the job responsibilities.
- The level will be determined by current CJIS guidelines and may change periodically.
- Certification is obtained by successfully completing a web-based training course and test which covers physical security, incident response, the protection of information and other IT specific security threats, vulnerabilities, and risks.
- Depending upon assignment, it may be required to obtain specialized certifications.
- This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
- A valid driver’s license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained.
- Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
