Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Substitute Child Instructor reports to the Family Literacy and After School Senior Manager and is responsible for planning, preparing, and carrying out age-appropriate learning activities for children aged 3 –13; facilitating Parent Child Together Activities when assigned; maintaining accurate and timely program records; and attending training and professional development activities as indicated by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare and carry out Learning Activities (learning games, reading, math tutoring, projects, Circle Time, songs, dances, free play in areas) with children aged 3-9, using the Creative Curriculum (pre-K) and the Illinois State Board of Education K-3 learning skills standards to guide and focus instruction.
- Prepare weekly lesson plans that support students’ academic growth.
- Attend field trips, library visits, and other activities with families outside of the classroom as needed.
- Instruct children and measure learning gains with approved evaluation tools.
- Assist in carrying out Parent Child Together Activities (PACT) between parents and children on any dates that these are programmed.
- Understand and enforce registration and attendance protocols.
- Implement disciplinary strategies as specified by the program’s policies.
- Organize and maintain the child development area in optimal condition, according to the program safety and educational guidelines.
- Perform job-related duties as may be directed by the immediate supervisor.
- Exhibit professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, team members, and the public.
- Show enthusiasm in assisting students and their parents.
- Attend further professional development as indicated in employee evaluations.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- A.A. degree with no less than 12 credits in childhood and early childhood education or foreign equivalent.
- 3 years minimum early childhood teaching.
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality.
- Able to work with a wide variety of people.
- Team player and willing to take on multiple tasks at once.
- Independent worker who requires minimal supervision.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills
- Above-average customer service attitude
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Strong telephone skills and ability to maintain composure under pressure.
- Dependable and punctual.
- Ability to adhere to deadlines.
- Able to swiftly and efficiently react to unpredictable events.
- Resourceful in managing conflict and challenges.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Approximately 50% of time spent standing, some lifting (under 30 lbs.)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
