Sandy Pine is a multigenerational, family-owned farming operation based in Nebraska. This position will be located in Ainsworth, Nebraska or Valentine, Nebraska.
The Production Operations Director is responsible for leading and optimizing all business operations at Sandy Pine, acting with a high urgency and holding the team accountable to do the same. Responsible for production analysis and financial planning, development of operational targets, long range strategic goals and bottom-line performance. Ensures best practices on the farms are developed and implemented to drive profitability, optimizing efficiency, promoting sustainability, and safeguarding the well-being of the animals and people.
Job Summary:
- Promote excellence in swine production and multiplication; partners with farm production management and supervisors in planning, scheduling, execution of standard work, operational efficiency, and driving results, while understanding the company vision to successfully manage change and urgency within the farms that support innovation and drive continuous improvement in all phases of production to maximize return on investment.
- Ability to analyze, understand, and correlate bottom line to immediate financial impact on sow farm production; partners with accounting and finance team to leverage information to improve efficiencies and profitability to increase financial performance for the company.
- Ability to walk the farm to identify areas of opportunity in production and biosecurity standards to protect the farm from disease risks; uses production and multiplication knowledge and technology to close gaps and advance work forward.
- Takes ownership of business performance and is driven for excellence in production and bottom-line, while developing short and long-range goals to improve overall performance. Understanding and ability to influence performance and efficiencies in sow farms, finishers, feed mill, boar stud, truck wash/logistics and biosecurity.
- Establishes realistic and measurable KPI's (key performance indicators) for production management and monitors results for compliance and continuous improvement.
- Makes recommendations to reduce cost, reduce risk, support compliance, improve efficiency, and optimize resource allocation; understands that feed cost and trucking (cost per unit; load size) are the biggest expense for the company and how that cost impacts the big picture with the bottom-line performance in production.
- Provide guidance and developmental opportunities for farm employees to reach their personal and professional goals. Understands that employees are our greatest asset and seeks opportunities to recognize and celebrate successes.
- Ensure humane treatment of animals, overseeing all aspects of daily care, feeding, watering, health screening, administration of medication and vaccinations, proper working conditions of ventilation system, cleaning, and movement of animals throughout barn, proper documentation of animal records and timely removal of deceased animals.
- Follows established safety rules, regulations, and maintains a safe and clean environment; comply with all local building codes and regulations.
- Partners with Production Supervisor and Human Resources for all employment related actions.
- Perform other duties as determined by management to support the broader needs of the business, animals and people.
Qualifications
Job Requirements:
- HS Graduate or equivalent.
- 5-10 years of related experience.
- Bilingual in Spanish a plus!
- Driver's license required.
- Travel between locations required.
- Proven experience in swine production; experience with multiplication or nucleus and genetic improvement is a plus!
- Proven leadership experience in swine production and multi-unit oversight with the ability to lead, build teams, influence the right behaviors and build engagement at all levels within the business.
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills with ability to manage time and priorities in a fast-paced changing environment. Understands how to push performance with a sense of urgency, while leading by example and ensuring team is enabled to make decisions.
- Ability to work independent (self-driven) and collaboratively, apply independent thinking and judgement, ability to troubleshoot and find solutions to on-site challenges. Forward thinker with sense of urgency at all times.
- High level of professionalism and confidentiality, building trust at all levels. Possess excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to manage difficult situations in a fair, consistent, and prompt manner.
- Flexibility to work on rotating weekends (Saturday and Sunday) to provide greater oversights and leadership is required.
- Ability to work in conditions with varying temperatures, loud noise, odiferous and dust.
- Ability to work around large animals, which can cause injury if handled improperly.
- Demonstrate ability and desire to work closely with animals, providing humane care and treatment.
- Ability to perform manual labor and stand for extended periods of times, ability to lift 20-30 pounds consistently and 40-50 pounds occasionally with assistance; proper lifting techniques and use of PPE equipment required.
- Willingness to take on additional duties as assigned by management.
