Morgan Steel, LLC is seeking a versatile Assembly Team / Maintenance Technician to join our steel fabrication and manufacturing operation in Memphis, TN. This position combines mechanical assembly, fabrication, and equipment maintenance responsibilities to support production efficiency and equipment reliability. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, highly adaptable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, job-shop environment with changing priorities and custom builds.
Key Responsibilities
Assembly & Fabrication
- Assemble, install, and align machinery, mechanical systems, and fabricated metal components according to blueprints, schematics, or verbal instructions.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment to assemble and build steel components, fixtures, and machinery.
- Fit, bolt, or weld parts together and verify mechanical operation through measurement and alignment checks.
- Collaborate with production, engineering, and maintenance teams to support equipment setups, changeovers, and rebuilds.
- Maintain organized assembly areas and ensure quality standards are met for all assembled products.
- Record and report assembly progress, component shortages, or design inconsistencies.
Maintenance & Equipment Reliability
- Assist with performing routine and preventive maintenance on CNC machines (Haas, Bystronic, Mazak), saws, presses, conveyors, and other steel processing equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues to minimize downtime.
- Replace worn parts such as bearings, belts, motors, and valves; perform light fabrication or welding for repairs.
- Support installation and calibration of new or rebuilt machines.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment history, and service logs.
General Support & Safety
- Work closely with supervisors and team members to meet production goals and minimize disruptions.
- Follow company and OSHA safety requirements, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and PPE procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of work areas.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and suggest process or equipment enhancements.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in both assembly and maintenance of industrial machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Skilled in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
- Basic welding, fabrication, or machining experience preferred.
- Understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship.
- Self-motivated, dependable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills for logging maintenance or production information.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2–5 years of experience in mechanical assembly, equipment maintenance, or industrial fabrication (steel or heavy manufacturing environment preferred).
- Experience with CNC or automated machinery (Haas, Bystronic, Mazak) highly desirable.
- Technical or trade school training in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanics, or Fabrication a plus.
- Forklift and overhead crane certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged standing, bending, climbing, and repetitive motions required.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Must have manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Must be able to work in hot, noisy, and industrial environments.
- PPE and steel-toe footwear required at all times.
