Position Summary:

The Assistant Cheer Coach will support the Head Coach in all aspects of coaching, team development, and program administration. This includes assisting with practices, developing routines, promoting team spirit, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all student-athletes. The Assistant Coach will work collaboratively with the Performing Arts staff to support recruitment of prospective students and retention of current team members, in alignment with the mission and values of Iona University.

* Please note: This is part-time stipend position (no benefits) with a term appointment for the current 2025-2026 academic year. The position is renewable annually pending a favorable review.

Primary Duties:               

  • Support the Head Coach in planning and executing practices for both the sideline and competitive cheer routines.
  • Assist in the Head Coach in recruiting new members, including high school outreach, campus events, in collaboration with Admissions and Performing Arts staff;
  • Collaborate on choreography, skills instruction, and conditioning programs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of enrollment, engagement, and retention initiatives.
  • Facilitate successful participation at UCA Camps, local and national competitions, including the UCA National Championships.
  • Ensure compliance with Iona University, NCAA, MAAC, and USA Cheer policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a visible and positive representative of the cheer program both on campus and at public events.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate and instruct physical cheerleading techniques, including jumps, stunts, and motions.
  • Support team logistics, including inventory management of uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist with the supervision of cheer and mascot performers at all Iona home basketball games (approximately 26 total).
  • Provide on-site support and chaperoning during postseason travel and events as needed

 

Qualifications


Minimum Requirements:

  • Prior experience cheering, coaching, or choreographing at the collegiate or professional level.
  • Availability to attend all Iona men’s and women’s home basketball games and postseason appearances.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required by team activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example and serve as a mentor and role model to student-athletes.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Active USA Cheer Coach Membership
  • *Note - the Assistant Cheer Coach is required to travel with team to 2026 UCA National Championships from January 14-January 19.
