JOB SUMMARY
For over 40 years, Kennedy Catholic has employed a full-time Elementary Band Director in
partnership with our regional Catholic grade schools. This established and well-regarded
program has introduced instrumental music to thousands of students since its inception, many of
whom have continued to play music in high school and beyond. As the program has grown, so
has the need for additional teacher support.
This long-term substitute position will assist the new Elementary Band Director by providing
direct music instruction in elementary Catholic schools in the region surrounding Kennedy
Catholic. This position will provide regular instruction at scheduled schools over the course of
the week. The Elementary Band Teacher reports to the Kennedy Catholic High School
Elementary Band Director but must also communicate effectively with the principals at each
assigned school.
This position provides a unique opportunity to cultivate young musicians in a faith-based
educational environment, fostering a love of music and developing instrumental proficiency. The
ideal candidate will have experience teaching beginning and intermediate band students, strong
classroom management skills, and the ability to inspire students through engaging and dynamic
instruction.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Instrumental Music, or a related field (Master’s
degree preferred)
• Valid Washington State Teaching Certification (or ability to obtain)
• Experience teaching band or instrumental music at the elementary/middle school level2
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Proficiency in teaching various band instruments (woodwinds, brass, percussion)
• Strong classroom management and instructional skills
• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
• Commitment to the mission and values of Catholic education
• Experience directing student ensembles and organizing performances
• Work with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and learning abilities
• Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners

• Ability to travel between school sites (reliable transportation required)
• Ability to work collaboratively with multiple school communities
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assist in the development, refinement, and implementation of a sequential band
curriculum aligned with national music education standards
• Recruit and retain students for participation in the elementary band program at each
partner location
• Teach beginning and intermediate band students at multiple elementary school locations.
• Provide group and individual instruction in woodwinds, brass, and percussion
• Assist with the organization, coordination, and conduct of performances/concert dates for
each assigned school, every year (2-3 concerts per school)
• Assist with the organization Elementary Band Festival at the end of the school year to be
held at Kennedy Catholic High School
• Manage band equipment, music libraries, and instrument inventories as including
scheduling and staffing rental days in the fall with current partner (Music & Arts)
• Communicate regularly with parents, school staff, and administrators regarding student
progress and program goals
• Foster a positive and supportive classroom environment
• Represent Kennedy Catholic to the larger Catholic schools’ communities
• Submit an 8th grade student roster to the Kennedy Catholic High School Band Director
and Admissions Team
• Work with the Kennedy Catholic High School Band Director as needed
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
• For the 2025-2026 school year, this position is projected to be part-time long-term
substitute, approximately 15 hours per week which includes time for planning and
grading and any required evening hours for performances. Any offered salary is
determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant's skills
and prior relevant experience, degrees, and certifications. The projected hourly rate is
$35-$50 per hour.
• This is a part-time position and does not qualify for participation in the Archdiocesan
benefits program
• Mileage reimbursement is provided for travel between school sites during assigned hours
