Street Maintenance Worker Trainee: $3,398 - $4,337
- Street Maintenance Worker Trainee - Unskilled labor class. Incumbents will assist skilled workers in performance of their duties and learn to perform semi-skilled work under close supervision.
- Street Maintenance Worker - Incumbents perform semi-skilled and unskilled work and may, under close supervision, perform skilled work in the general work of the area assigned.
- Senior Street Maintenance Worker - Incumbents perform semi-skilled work in the specialized street maintenance trade area, skillfully operate and service equipment, and may direct the work of others.
EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include but is not limited to, panel interview, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job-related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.
SELECTION PROCESS: As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.
Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.
Position Duties
- Positively and helpfully interact with co-workers, supervisors, and everyone encountered.
- Provide good customer service to all individuals contacted in the course of work in a courteous and respectful manner.
- Assist with street repair and maintenance.
- Perform a wide variety of manual labor, as necessary for the completion of the job.
- Break out old concrete, mix and pour concrete.
- Prepare, place, and compact asphalt pavement.
- Sign work, maintain traffic markings and stencils.
- Weed abatement, drainage clearing, and maintenance.
- Comprehend, retain, and execute precise job instructions.
- Adhere to the guidance of supervisors, lead workers, and other authorized personnel overseeing tasks.
- Demonstrate sound judgment to ensure safety, continuously remain productive in completing assigned tasks to best benefit the City, and adeptly manage any arising issues.
- Promptly adapt to shifting priorities.

- Load and unload supplies
- Dig trenches, and use air tools to break through and compact
- Maintain yards and buildings

- Learn to maintain mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Operate light equipment, such as trucks, compressors, forklifts, skid steers, oil trailers, crack seal trailers, water tank trailers, backhoes, sweeper trucks, dump trucks, water trucks, patch trucks, traffic striping trucks and machines, rollers, skip loaders, and other equipment.
- Learn to operate larger or more complex equipment, such as articulated loaders, tractors with mower attachments, pavers, and other equipment.
- Drainage clearing and maintenance
- Skillfully operate, clean, service, and make minor adjustments to power-driven equipment of medium and light weight and horsepower such as trucks, compressors, skid steers, oil trailers, crack seal trailers, water tank trailers, skip-loaders, loaders, backhoes, tractors, including attachments for mowing and other uses, power mowers, forklifts, steel, and rubber tire rollers, pavers, sweeper trucks, dump trucks, water trucks, patch trucks, traffic striping trucks, and machines or other motorized equipment of comparable size and complexity.
- Report need for mechanical adjustment and repair of equipment.
- May independently patch streets and alleys using pneumatic tools, asphalt rakes, rollers.
- Construct and repair curbs and gutters; build forms, pour and finish concrete.
- Direct the work of others.
- Keep labor and materials records.
- Utilize two-way radio for field communication.
ALLOCATION FACTORS: Proficiency in driving and operating equipment; good work ethic; strong interpersonal skills; good attendance; acceptance of supervision; independence of sound decision-making; ability to train others in equipment operation and safety.

Minimum Qualifications
- Street Maintenance Worker Trainee: Typical qualifying background would include reasonable physical condition and demonstrated ability to perform manual labor.
- Street Maintenance Worker: At least one year of experience in street maintenance and construction work.
- Senior Street Maintenance Worker: At least two years of experience at a semi-skilled level in street maintenance, at least six months of which is with the City of Lompoc, including sufficient experience in the operation and servicing of power-driven and/or large motorized equipment to demonstrate proficiency, and demonstrate consistent achievement of the minimum qualifications.
- Street Maintenance Worker / Trainee: Possession of a valid and appropriate California driver's license, which shall at a minimum be Commercial Class B with “N” tank endorsement. Employee shall obtain such required license within six (6) months of beginning work in the position.
- Senior Street Maintenance Worker - Possession of an appropriate valid California driver's license for the equipment operated, which shall at a minimum be Commercial Class A with “N” tank endorsement. Employee shall obtain such required license within six (6) months of beginning work in the position.
All Levels:
- Basic tools, equipment and materials used in maintenance work
- Basic safety precautions and procedures
- Applicable safety and other state and local codes
- Basic math
- Simple record keeping
- Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in street maintenance work
- Mechanical operation of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric-powered equipment;
- Provisions of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles, including commercial vehicles, small, large, and low-moving equipment, on streets, roads, and highways
All Levels:

Experience gained by incumbents in the Street Maintenance Worker and Senior Street Maintenance Worker can provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to qualify for Street Maintenance Heavy Equipment Operator and Lead Street Maintenance Worker.
