The ideal candidate in this position will perform a variety of duties involved in the enforcement of City parking regulations and ordinances. They will also provide general assistance and information to the public including information regarding applicable parking regulations.
We currently have one vacancy in the Reno Police Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.
This is an internal recruitment to provide a promotional opportunity for all qualified current classified City of Reno employees.

Position Duties
- Enforce City parking regulations and ordinances pertaining to time, bus, loading and fire zones, bike lanes, residential parking permits, abandoned vehicles, and handicapped parking; issue citations or notices of violation; appear before a hearing officer to defend contested citations as necessary.
- Patrol the City on an assigned route and mark vehicles in violation of parking codes; cite vehicles exceeding time limits; enter information into handheld ticket writer; take photo documentation with handheld ticket writer and attach to infraction.
- Provide assistance to the general public; provide assistance in road side emergency situations; provide directions to various City locations.
- Respond to requests for service from the general public; retrieve messages and return calls for inquiries and complaints left on message line; follow-up and complete service requests generated through Reno Direct; complete follow-up information in the Q-Alert system.
- Assist in traffic and crowd control functions at various special events; interact with and provide assistance to various other public agencies in the performance of assigned duties.
- Assist in the identification and removal of abandoned or illegally parked vehicles.
- Report broken and/or malfunctioning parking meters; bag or remove bags from meters for special parking requirements.
- Report damaged traffic control devices, power lines, road hazards, vehicle accidents, and related items while on patrol and provide traffic control while on the scene.
- Make entries and inquiries into the computer system regarding vehicle registration, title checks, and abandoned vehicles.
- Provide training to new employees and employees from other departments.
- Perform special assignments as assigned.
- Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
Combinations of relevant work experience and education that are equivalent to the following are acceptable.*
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
- One year of experience providing in-person customer service. Experience in the enforcement of codes or ordinances is desirable.
License and Certificate:
- Possession of a valid driver's license
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS) certification within six months of appointment.
Additional Screening:
A background investigation will be conducted in order to verify the accuracy and completeness of statements contained on the application and to obtain information relative to predicting successful performance as a Parking Enforcement Officer. Those individuals whose rank places them in the range to be certified to the department will be provided with a background information packet. This initial packet must be completed within the time period specified by the Reno Police Department.
In addition, eligible candidates selected for hire from the certified list for Police Department positions will be required to submit to an eye detect examination, medical, visual, psychological and drug screening at the City's expense. These processes will be conducted by a licensed polygrapher, physician, and clinical psychologist. The screening components will be used to evaluate a candidate's capability to safely perform the related physical and mental demands of the job.
Evaluation Standards:
An individual may not be appointed if they have:
- Been convicted of a felony in this state or any offense which would be a felony if committed in this state.
- Been convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude or the unlawful use, sale or possession of a controlled substance.
- Engaged in the use of marijuana after the submission of this application.
- A documented history of physical violence.

Examination Process:
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online Customer Service Aptitude Profile, along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:
Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 80%
Customer Service Aptitude Profile = 20%
Online Assessment Details:
Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the online assessment once the recruitment has closed. This test will be self-administered with no proctor, which means candidates will be able to complete it online at their convenience during the designated testing window.

Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:
The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked "QUESTIONS" on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.
- Responses to your T&E questions should be consistent with the information given in your application details. Answers are subject to verification.
- Failure to complete all of the questions or incomplete responses will result in a lower score; therefore, it is advantageous for you to provide a full and complete response to each supplemental question.
- In order to receive credit for education or training, you must attach copies of your transcripts, diploma, or relevant certificates to your online application.
- Resumes or questionnaires uploaded as attachments to the application will not be accepted in lieu of completing each question online.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:
Promotional Examinations (Rule VIII, Section 7):If two or more employees earn the same final score (including seniority points), veterans’ preference will be applied if any of the tied employees have submitted proof of an honorable military discharge. This preference is only used to break ties. If a tie still remains, it will be broken based on seniority in the current classification. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.

Seniority Credit (Rule VIII, Section 9):
Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:
The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.
Appointment and Certification:
Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
