Position Summary:
The Exec. VP of Development will direct the design and implementation of all fundraising activities for NHS. This employee will be responsible for meeting revenue goals for the Annual Fund, special projects, events, capital, and comprehensive campaigns. This employee will assist with donor development encouraging forward momentum for donor stewardship, cultivation, and enhancement of major gifts and planned gifts.
Essential Job Functions
- Fundraising
- Responsible for the oversight of all fundraising activities including, managing a large portfolio of donors, donor stewardship, donor acquisition models, lapsed donor re-engagement, personal solicitations, grant submissions, direct mail, special events, annual fund appeals, or any other multi-channel appeals.
- Responsible for developing, measuring, and meeting revenue goals for the annual fund, special projects, events, comprehensive and capital campaigns. Work to grow planned giving and endowment fund boosting the revenue stream and increasing agency financial stability. Leadership with strategy and implementation of major gift calls. Provide periodic progress reports on revenue status to staff and board leadership, as requested.
- Oversee input of donor information documentation into Raiser’s Edge NXT data base. Work in conjunction with CFO to ensure a regular and accurate transfer of donation information from Raiser’s Edge NXT to Financial Edge NXT.
- Administration and Management
- Manage all staff members and projects conducted by the Development department.
- Conduct department staff meetings.
- Demonstrate a commitment to team building through modeling a positive and respectful attitude toward all NHS employees.
- Serve as a member of the executive team attending staff meetings.
- Attend meetings and participate in discussions which require vital resources for success and viability. Participate in task force meetings as needed.
- Participate in discussions regarding agency-wide policies and procedures.
- Foster a Culture of Advocacy both within the development team and across the entire organization.
- Budget Preparation and Oversight
- Responsible for the preparation and monitoring of the Development department annual budget and participate in revenue projection for overall NHS budget.
- Provide periodic progress reports on revenue status to staff and board leadership, as requested.
- Board of Directors
- Assist with prospects for board nomination review; assist with the implementation of the board giving policy.
- Friends Forever Volunteer Guild
- Serve in a support capacity to the guild including supervising staff liaison, attend meetings, provide support and guidance on fundraising initiatives as needed.
- Provide information as appropriate so that this volunteer group can serve as advocates for the mission of NHS.
- Marketing/PR
- Work with the Exec. VP of Marketing/PR to develop and execute the agency’s marketing plan.
- Serve as a resource to the Exec. VP of Marketing/PR on any public relation activities.
- Education
- Provide support for the agency’s various educational outreach programs.
- Foundation Board of Directors
- Serve as staff liaison to the Foundation Board of Trustees.
- Schedule and facilitate bi-annual meetings.
- Assist with the financial objectives of NHS Foundation
- Assist with the Foundation’s long-range plan.
- Oversee all business transactions by or on behalf of the Foundation.
- Work to grow endowment fund boosting the revenue stream and increasing NHS financial stability.
- Ensure that NHS investments are managed by responsible and reputable counsel in accordance with policies and procedures set by the Investment Committee of the Foundation Board.
- Personnel
- Provide leadership to ensure a professional, effective, and efficient development department. This includes responsibility for hiring, training, motivating, coaching, promoting, supervising, and terminating department employees.
- Resolve employee work related issues and complaints in conjunction with Human Resources.
- Continually work to improve personal management skills as well as the skills of direct reports within scope of responsibility.
- Ensure all NHS procedures and policies are carried out properly.
- Participate in discussions regarding agency-wide policies and procedures.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field or other affiliated specialties, required.
- Master's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field, preferred.
- CFRE or CAP® certification a plus.
- Extensive knowledge of and experience with fundraising planning and execution.
- 5-10 years of responsible leadership experiences in an executive management position.
- 5-10 years of proven executive experience in strategic fundraising and development that includes direct involvement in annual funds, grants, special projects, events, capital and comprehensive campaign, management of large donor portfolio, donor stewardship, cultivation and procurement of major gifts and donor data base management.
- Previous experience working in a non-profit organization.
- 5-10 years of proven experience in grant writing, reporting, and management.
- 5-10 years of proven personnel management experience, required. Such experience must include; hiring, training, motivating, coaching, promoting, supervising, and terminating employees.
- Must be both detail and vision oriented with the ability to think strategically.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, to include ability to edit departmental written work and communications.
- Must have experience with public speaking to both small and large groups.
- Experience with Raiser’s Edge NXT database, preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, required.
- Must have problem solving expertise in an environment of diverse, passionate, people.
- Must show compassion toward animals and have a strong desire to help them.
- Must demonstrate maturity, good judgment, and a professional manner and appearance.
- Must be considerate and respectful to all employees, donors, volunteers, and customers.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and be able to provide proof of vehicle insurance.

- The noise level in the office environment is usually quiet, though braking or whining of animals may be escalated at certain times in certain areas of the building.
- High exposure to animals whose reactions to the shelter environment cannot be predicted.
- Temperatures in the shelter environment are varied, though usually moderate, and dependent on the season.
- Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous chemicals.
- Ability to work around animals without severe allergic reactions.
- As work may need to be done outside of the shelter, the employee may encounter environmental issues outside of our control such as fallen tree limbs, rainstorms or snow/ice. When this occurs, the employee must report the issues immediately to their direct supervisor who will work to resolution.
