These employees provide fire and life safety services to the City of Redmond, and King County Fire District 34. They alsoprovide ALS services to the cities of Duvall, Kirkland, Woodinville, and the unincorporated communities of NortheastKing County. This represents a service area of 266 square miles and a population of over 333,000 citizens.

Position Duties
Assesses nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance Restores and stabilizes heart rhythm on pulseless, non-breathing patient, using defibrillator or as directed by physician Monitors cardiac patient using electrocardiograph Initiates intravenous fluids to administer medication or drugs or to replace fluids lacking in body Performs endotracheal intubations to open airways and ventilate patient Administers injections, medications, and drugs, following established protocols Administers initial treatment at emergency scene and takes and records patient’s vital signs Assists in extricating trapped victims and transports sick and injured persons to treatment center Observes, records, and reports to physician the patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents Participates in planning related to quality assurance, research, and EMS education, both ALS and BLS May communicate with physician and other medical personnel via radio/telephone May drive mobile intensive care unit to emergency scene May serve as team leader for emergency medical technicians Must also perform regular firefighter duties Monitors the emergency radio when on duty and responds to major fires, EMS, or other emergency incidents When assigned, wears breathing apparatus, climbs ladders, uses specialized tools and equipment to enter hazardous environments to assist in saving lives or protecting property Uses all firefighting equipment as appropriate to extinguish fires in buildings, grass, terrain, automobiles, or other situations that may involve oil chemicals, electrical, or other flammable or combustible materials or origins Responds to various hazardous environments wearing breathing apparatus and using specialized tools and equipment to save lives, protect property, suppress fires, and administer first aid to the sick and injured Drives emergency response vehicles as qualified and appropriate for the incident; transports patients to hospital or other medical facility Performs other duties as assigned May maintain King County EMT/CBT instructor endorsement

Conduct strenuous tasks under emergency fire, medical, and other hazardous situations and meet the minimum standards of agility and endurance Operate a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) as a condition of employment per the Respiratory Protection Standard 292=6-62 WAC Part E Learn pertinent state and local laws and department policies, procedures, and operational guidelines Maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and the public Follow oral and written directions Maintain current knowledge in emergency medical technician practices and procedures Diagnose medical problems quickly and determine appropriate treatment Operate basic life support equipment and other medical equipment contained in an emergency response vehicle Respond quickly and safely to fire and/or emergency medical calls and provide skilled medical care or specializedfirefighting function Perform emergency scene work to a firefighter level including EMS related incidents Perform at emergency scenes as a staging/base manager, safety officer, command aid, or as part of emergencyoperations crew Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing Prepare and maintain reports and records within assigned area of responsibility Maintain confidentiality in working with information of a proprietary, confidential, or personal nature
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma/GED equivalent
Certification as Firefighter 1 within two years of employment
Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of forcefrequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Ability to obtain a valid Washington state driver’s license by the time of appointment, with evidence of a gooddriving record according to insurance guidelines
United States citizen who can read and write the English language
Must meet medical and physical agility standards and all civil service requirements.
Must fulfill bargaining unit membership requirements within 30 days of hire
King County Trained Lateral
- Already certified through King County paramedic training program
Accelerated Lateral
- National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or graduation from paramedic program
- 2 years practicing as a paramedic
Certification in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Licenses and Other Requirements:
- King County Trained Lateral
- Already certified through King County paramedic training program
- Accelerated Lateral
- Ability to obtain University of Washington/King County paramedic certification within 12 months of appointment
