Salary Information
$16.50 - $20.06 Hourly

DEFINITION
Under general supervision of Public Works Superintendent-Facilities and Parks, performs a variety of tasks such as monitoring the activities of park users; provides information to park users; and assists local law enforcement agency with the enforcement of City policies and codes at various parks, primarily on Saturdays and Sundays; performs related duties as required.

Position Duties

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a part-time position and incumbents in this class normally perform patrols in parks, inspects park facilities and report graffiti, vandalism and any items to be repaired through work orders; acts as Department liaison to organized sports groups; verifies park reservations and assist in management of group activities; monitors and communicates concerns of park users; performs related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

These functions may not be present in all positions in this class.  When a position is to be filled, the essential functions will be noted in the announcement of position availability.  The Park Ambassador (Part-Time) position may assist Full Time Park Maintenance staff in any or all of the following functions:
  • Maintains and inspects playground equipment; assists in setting up, breaking down, and general maintenance for City sponsored events.
  • Sweeps, cleans and stocks rest rooms with supplies; cleans courts, walks, and other recreational equipment and facilities; may assist in setting up tables and chairs for recreational activities.
  • Performs various building maintenance tasks; remove graffiti and as necessary, empty and re-line trash receptacles as necessary. Prepares interior and exterior surfaces for painting. 
  • May be required to perform work on weekends and/or answer emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as placing barricades, removing fallen trees and limbs, and emergency repair of irrigation systems.
  • Ability to operate computer, calculator, telephone, portable radio and other common office equipment.
  • Ability to understand and respond to the public's and staff's requests for assistance, both on the phone and in person.
  • Ability to sit or stand for up to two hours at a time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to drive to and from one location to another in the course of doing business.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance.  Example combinations include but are not limited to:
  • Education:   Equivalent to graduation from High School or GED.
  • Experience: Experience and/or exposure with parks main­tenance, preferably six (6) months. Public contact and customer service is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Keep accurate records; perform unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks using a variety of tools and equipment
  • Operate vehicles and stationary mechanical equipment; respond to emergency and problem situations in an effective manner.
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of personnel and the general public, and establish/maintain effective working relationships
  • Understand and apply policies and procedures.
  • Work independently.
  • Work safely
  • Possess exemplary customer service skills.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
These are position functions which may be changed, deleted or reassigned to accommodate an individual with a disability.

 Special Requirements
  • Possession of a current and valid Class C California driver's license.
  • A satisfactory driving record.
  • Will need to be available to work evenings, weekends, and for special events. 
  • Must obtain a First Aid and CPR certificate within (6) months of employment.
Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions
  • Position requires sitting, standing, and walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, crawling, and making repetitive hand movements above and below shoulder level in the performance of daily duties. 
  • The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment and acute hearing is required when providing face-to-face service. 
  • The need to lift, carry, pull, and push tools, supplies, and other equipment weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. 
  • Additionally, the incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot and cold. 
  • Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.
