In this role, you'll play a key part in ensuring that our spaces remain clean, safe, and welcoming for the community and employees. This extra-help position works from 4:00AM - 12:30PM on weekdays, and occasionally on weekends for special projects.

This extra-help position works from 4:00AM - 12:30PM on weekdays, and occasionally on weekends for special projects. Part-Time Extra Help positions are not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). 

Qualified applicants will have a record of demonstrating the following competencies:

  • Quality Orientation: Accomplishing tasks by considering all areas involved, no matter how detailed; showing concern for all aspects of the job; accurately checking processes and tasks; being watchful over a period of time.
  • Safety Focus: Identifying and improving conditions that affect own and others’ safety; upholding safety standards.

Part-Time Extra Help positions are not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026). Temporary and part-time employees are at-will and not covered by the Civil Service System. Some benefits for temporary employees include sick leave, temporary employee retirement plan, and 3.5% bilingual pay if applicable.

Position Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Utilizing cleaning solutions and agents in a proper and safe manner.
  • Emptying waste baskets and removing trash in and around City facilities. 
  • Performing all aspects of floor maintenance on carpets, hardwood, tile and various other floor surfaces.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and replenishing cleaning supplies as needed.
  • Washing windows, walls and other surfaces, dusts and cleans furniture and fixtures in buildings, restrooms and elevators.
  • Cleaning sidewalks and walkways and removing debris from adjacent grounds, parking lots, and parking garages.
  • Operating motor vehicles and other equipment required for carrying out work assignments.
  • Performing minor maintenance work such as replacing light bulbs.
  • Rearranging or relocating furniture as required for cleaning, room setups and occasional moves.
  • Maintaining cleaning equipment and supplies in serviceable conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Basic materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in cleaning and maintaining buildings.
  • Materials and methods used in custodial work.
  • Proper use and purpose of common hand tools and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Cleaning solvents, soaps, and waxes used in custodial work, as well as their proper use according to state and federal regulations.
  • Standard safety precautions and rules used in custodial work, such as the handing and disposing of hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens in accordance with safety standards.
Ability to:
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Perform routine building maintenance tasks, involving minor repairs on equipment and facilities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Lift, carry, and pull equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Push or pull heavy equipment.
  • Follow simple written and oral instructions.
  • Work outside and indoors, in all weather conditions.
  • Work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Read and write the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Education: Equivalent to a high school diploma.
 
Experience: One (1) year of experience performing routine building custodial and maintenance work. Custodial and building maintenance is a public setting preferred.

Special Requirements: 

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent education

  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a good driving record is required.

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at time of application.
