POSITION SUMMARY:
Hours: 16 hours per week
The Teaching Assistant plays a key role in supporting classroom instruction for adult English language learners. This position works closely with teachers to deliver lessons, manage classroom activities, and provide individualized support that promotes language acquisition and life skills. In addition to assisting in the classroom, the Teaching Assistant helps create a welcoming environment for clients and ensures smooth daily operations. Responsibilities include front desk duties and transportation support, enabling clients to access essential services and programs. As the first point of contact for many clients and visitors, this role requires professionalism, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.
The English Language Center is a program of Jannus, Inc., a fifty-year-old nonprofit organization that operates a broad social-impact portfolio across Idaho.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties recorded below are representative of the duties of the class and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by incumbents(s) of any particular position.
Assist lead teacher with lesson preparation and classroom setup.
- Support students during activities, group work, and practice exercises.
- Provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring as directed by the teacher.
- Help monitor student progress and maintain attendance records.
- Prepare and organize teaching materials and resources.
- Greet and assist visitors, clients, and staff in a courteous and professional manner.
- Answer and direct phone calls; manage messages and inquiries.
- Maintain a clean and organized reception area.
- Schedule appointments and maintain calendars as needed.
- Safely operate the organization’s van to transport clients to and from designated locations.
- Ensure the van is clean, fueled, and in good working condition; report maintenance needs promptly.
- Assist passengers with boarding and exiting the vehicle as needed.
- Maintain accurate transportation logs and mileage records.
- Perform basic administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, and photocopying.
- Implement trauma-informed service practices when interacting with clients.
- Complete any other assigned duties.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with diverse populations.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
- Ability to follow lesson plans and adapt to classroom needs
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (Microsoft Office, email, scheduling tools).
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to safely operate a passenger van and assist clients with boarding and exiting.
- Ability to maintain accurate transportation and administrative records.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Completion of a criminal history background check post-offer of employment.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
1- 3 years of program assistance preferred
