A day in the life of an Evening Field Services Lead:

At 1pm, you arrive in your GVR-provided uniform. You meet briefly with morning shift staff before they leave. Reviewing the center’s activities plan for the evening, you see that two large banquets will wrap up around the same time, in locations four miles apart. You note that in one banquet location, the staff is fairly new, and you know they are still struggling with time management. You note that another rec center has virtually no activity plans. You make a note to help the staff at the quiet center get their evening cleaning done early so they can go help the newer staff member break down and clean up after the big banquet. You check the scheduling app to see that all the evening staff have clocked on, and then you get in the company van and head out.

Your aim is to make contact with each of the eight evening RSAs over the course of the shift. You know who your solid go-getters are, so you don’t plan to spend a lot of time with them—just a friendly check-in to see if they need anything and to let them know they are appreciated. You have a rookie on their second solo shift at a center where the members can be very social and tie up a lot of staff time, so you prioritize a check-in with that staffer. You help them stay on track to complete their tasks on time, and let them know you will be back at the end of the evening to help clean the clay studio, where proper OSHA processes can be time-consuming.

As you visit centers, you are constantly assessing the state of the place for tidiness and cleanliness. You look through the custodial closets for signs that materials, tools, and chemicals are being used at the expected rate. At one center, you find a custodial closet in disarray and meet with the staff in there, so you can chat while the two of you tidy it up together. You pick up laundry at one of the laundry locations so you can drop it off at the center where it belongs. A call comes in: a member has spilled baby oil on a locker room floor, creating a serious hazard. The staff is under pressure to switch the auditorium over from a large card group to a dance set-up in under an hour. You assure them you are on your way to clean up the oil slick and ensure the floor is safe to walk on. In the back of the van, there is the perfect cleaning chemical for an oily mess, because every week, you make sure the inventory and procurement team knows what needs to be restocked.

Your wintertime shift is busy. You are driving, walking, carrying, pushing, lifting, reaching. Aside from your lunch hour and a bit of documentation time here and there, you are in continuous motion. You respond to the unexpected with calm efficiency, adding humor whenever possible. You are greeting members, noting problems to address another day, and providing continuous staff guidance and training in a friendly, calm, supportive way that makes folks look forward to seeing you each evening. You solve problems. You make things easier, shinier. Staff know you are looking out for them. When you are on the clock, the Field Services Supervisors rest easy.
