About School of Rock

School of Rock is the original performance-based, interactive music school, founded in 1998 in Philadelphia. With over 300 schools worldwide, we’re the largest after-school music education provider, and our mission is simple: to help kids rock their worlds.

We believe music is for everyone. Our programs empower young people from every walk of life to express themselves, connect with others, and build confidence through performance.

Position Overview

The Assistant Music Director plays a key role in shaping the next generation of rockers by fostering creativity, confidence, and musical growth. This position focuses on our youngest students — Little Wings (ages 3–5), Rookies (ages 6–7), and Rock 101 (ages 8–10) — providing them with a positive, inclusive, and inspiring introduction to music.

We’re looking for a passionate educator who thrives in a team-oriented, student-centered environment and is eager to make a difference through music.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support all music and education activities within early education programs.
  • Deliver engaging private and group instruction using the School of Rock curriculum and continuously enhance it with your creativity and experience.
  • Track and celebrate each student’s progress, maintaining clear communication with parents and guardians.
  • Build a reward and recognition system that encourages growth, effort, and a sense of belonging.
  • Partner with local schools and community organizations to bring “School of Rock On the Road” to new students within a 4-mile radius.
  • Participate in school tours for prospective families and help them understand the value of our programs.
  • Teach lessons as directed by the Music Director to support overall school success.
  • Maintain teaching equipment and materials, ensuring a high-quality learning environment.
  • Train and mentor instructors within early education programs.
  • Be visible, approachable, and engaged with students and families — fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and safe space.
  • Adhere to all School of Rock safety, conduct, and supervision policies.
What We’re Looking For
  • 3+ years of experience teaching early childhood or elementary music programs (preferred).
  • A strong understanding of music theory and/or curriculum design (a plus).
  • A warm, patient, and encouraging teaching style that celebrates each child’s individuality.
  • Excellent communication and people skills with both students and families.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • A collaborative mindset with creative problem-solving skills.
  • Resilience under pressure and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
  • Ideally, a working musician or performer with formal music training.
  • Comfortable using technology such as Google Workspace (G Suite) — training provided as needed.
