Department Intern Heritage Education na Lubbock Lake Landmark (a division of Texas Tech University Museum)

Lubbock Lake Landmark supports a full-time position for graduate-level students and recent graduates of master’s degree programs who intend to pursue careers in fields of interpretation and informal education. This program provides practical training and experience in interpretation and informal education practices at a premiere National Historic Landmark. Graduate interns participate in all aspects of public interpretation including planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.
The internship in heritage education, in addition to providing quality-learning experiences for the intern, is vital to the Landmark’s ability to provide a wide variety of educational services.
Education and public programming at the Landmark support the following goals:
• to create programs and an environment that provide significant learning experiences for visitors of all ages;
• to provide creative learning experiences for students that extend beyond formal classroom instruction;
• to provide opportunities for learning across a wide variety of disciplines and to accommodate diverse learning styles;
• to recognize the diversity of audiences and the importance of expanding the dialogue to include those audiences in both program development and presentation.Performs work to assist in the organization and implementation of projects and programs. Responsibilities include activities which require knowledge of departmental procedures. Employee performance is based upon a review of completed work and overall results obtained.

• Develop and teach classes and workshops throughout the year for area youth
• Assist with planning and implementation of public programming initiatives including workshops, tours, and outreach programs
• Research and upgrade the Landmark’s traveling trunk program
• Develop and implement methods to evaluate public programming initiatives
• Create Social Media content
• Assist with visitor services including answering phones, interacting with visitors, and gift shop operations
• Assist with other institution activities as needed

The Lubbock Lake Landmark is a division of the Museum of Texas Tech University, the Lubbock Lake Landmark is an archaeological and natural history preserve and dig site at the northern edge of the city of Lubbock, Texas. The Landmark contains evidence of 12,000 years of occupation by ancient peoples on the Southern High Plains. The Landmark offers exhibitions exploring animals and culture a range of public programs. The Landmark has a variety of hiking trails totaling 4.5 miles you can experience at your own pace. Enjoy a nature trail (2.5-3.5 miles) while observing animals and vegetation across the changing landscape, hike our beautiful wildflower trail (.5 miles) that identifies many native plants, trees, and wildflowers, and be amazed by the archaeological trail (.5 miles) where 12,000 years of history has been discovered and continues to be an active dig site and educational component to the Heritage and Museum Sciences Master’s Degree program. The Landmark welcomes visitors of all ages year round.
